Top Times at Mt. SAC Relays Lead this Week's Performance of the Week Honors

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Clayton Murphy and Cooper Teare

We had a tie in the Readers' Choice this week. Clayton Murphy and Cooper Teare each earned 20.95 percent of the vote.

Murphy, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist over 800 meters, has made a name for himself for getting everything right when it counts. Last summer, he surprised everyone with a 1:42.93 in the Olympic final, vaulting him up to US#3 all-time.

Making his 2017 outdoor season debut, Murphy stormed from behind over the final lap to win in a world-leading 1:43.60 at the Mt. SAC Relays after the race opened with a 51.3 first lap. He won by over two seconds over Eliud Rutto and Eric Sowinski.

Murphy's time is his second best, after his Olympic final run last year. It is also fast enough where it would have ranked him top 10 in the world for each of the last 10 years. It is still too early to tell what Murphy's fantastic time means for the remainder of the outdoor season.

Teare has been on a tear in recent weeks. The high school senior from St. Joseph Notre Dame CA, and an Oregon commit, now owns three US#1 prep marks this season. He has run 14:13.26 for 5,000 meters and last week he won the Arcadia Invitational 3,200 meters in 8:41.46.

On Friday, Teare ran in the Brooks high school mile at the Mt. SAC Relays. He ran 4:00.16, winning by 10 seconds over Callum Bolger of San Luis Obispo CA.

In addition to besting Sam Worley's 4:00.61 from the Texas Relays, Teare's race moves him up to 10th on the all-time prep list. He displaces Donald Sage, who competed for York IL and ran 4:00.29 for the mile in 2000.

Editors’ Choice: Raevyn Rogers

Raevyn Rogers finished one vote away from Murphy and Teare in the voting. The Oregon junior made her individual outdoor debut in style, not only running a personal best, but setting the collegiate record as well.

Rogers ran 1:59.10 to win the invitational section of the 800 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays, beating former Duck Laura Roesler. It was a 0.61-second personal best for Rogers.

Suzy Hamilton owned the previous record of 1:59.11. She set it in 1990 while at Wisconsin, making it one of the older records on the books.

In addition to being an 800-meter ace, including four NCAA titles at the distance, Rogers also pulls regular duty on Oregon's 4x400 relay team. Running the leadoff leg, she helped her team to a 3:27.98 win. LSU finished second in 3:31.61.
