Davis, Coleman Earn Performance of the Week Honors - May 16Published by
Speedsters Are This Week's Performance of the Week HonoreesTrack and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection. Readers’ Choice: Tara DavisWith 49.08 percent of the vote, Tara Davis won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Sam Worley with their second-place tally of 14.22 percent. The Agoura CA senior stormed to victory in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 12.89 at the CIF-SS Division 2 Prelims. There was a 2.6m/s tail wind, over the allowable for record purposes, but the mark ties the #2 time ever run in any conditions. High school record holder Tia Jones of Walton GA has also run 12.89 in addition to her record of 12.84, both set last year. Davis bolted out of the blocks and led from the gun. By the time she reached the fifth hurdle, the field was only traversing the fourth flight of hurdles. By the time Davis crossed the line, the field was going over the penultimate flight. She won by 1.12 seconds. In addition to the big hurdle win, Davis also earned victories in the long and triple jumps. Her marks of 19-8.25 (6.00m) in the long jump and 39-10 (12.14m) in the triple jump were off her bests, but more than enough to easily qualify for the finals. Davis will compete in all three events on Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California. Editors’ Choice: Christian ColemanThere were many good performances to choose from this week for the Editors' Choice Award. Lindon Victor broke the collegiate record in the decathlon, Luvo Manyonga set a Diamond League record in the long jump, Deajah Stevens ran a world leading 200 meters and the Port Arthur Memorial TX boys ran US#2 all-time marks in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. However, this week's award goes to Christian Coleman, a junior at Tennessee, for his one-day double of 9.97 in the 100 meters and 19.98 in the 200 meters to win both events at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Coleman is the eighth man to join the same-day sub-10/20-second club, but he is the youngest to achieve that feat. It is also the first time a collegian has completed the same-day double. This performance comes two weeks after Coleman lit the football world on fire with 4.12 clocking in the 40-yard dash, an event run at the NFL Combine. Coleman has shown no interest in turning in his spikes for cleats. Below is a chronological list of same-day sub-10/20-second doubles ever performed, prior to Coleman. Ato Bolden completed the feat six times in his career. More news |
