The Track Usain Bolt Set the 100 and 200 Meters World Records to Be Removed in Stadium Remodel

Berlin hosted the 2009 IAAF World Championships at the Olympic Stadium. Usain Bolt ran his two world records at those championships, running 9.58 for 100 meters and 19.19 for 200 meters.

Now, according to Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports, the track on which Bolt ran those world records may be removed in a remodel plan released on Friday. The stadium would be converted into a soccer only facility for the Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

The history of Berlin's Olympic Stadium goes back to the 1936 Olympics, the event for which the stadium was built and in which Jesse Owens won the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 relay and the long jump. A street just outside the stadium is was renamed Jesse Owens Allee in 1984.

Previously, the stadium was remodeled in the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup. It is slated to host the 2018 European Championships before the renovation would begin.

The Berlin mayor Michael Mueller said the renovation could still allow for a removable track so that the stadium could continue to host track and field events.
