Mt. SAC awarded Olympic Trials bid for 2020

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The USATF on Wednesday announced that it had awarded the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials to Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

By moving to the Los Angeles area, and to Mt. SAC's Hilmer Lodge Stadium, there is reasonable expectation to generate wider exposure for the event. The facility has undergone a $62 million upgrade and has expanded the seating capacity to more than 21,000. It will be the first time the L.A. area has hosted the trials since 1984.

Eugene and Sacramento had also bid for the 2020 Trials, which will be contested to select the U.S. Olympic track and field team that will compete in Tokyo that summer.

Eugene, which lost the right to hold the meet after three highly successful meets in 2008, 2012 and 2016, has plenty on its plate as it is. The construction project to expand Hayward Field is already months behind its original schedule and the city has four years to prepare for the IAAF World Championships in 2021.

The 2020 Olympic Trials in southern California are currently penciled in for June 19-28, 2020.

"On behalf of Mt. SAC, we are excited aand humbled to be entrusted with hosting the Olympic Trials," Mt SAC Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Doug Todd said in a USATF release. "Both Eugene and Sacramento have set a very high bar regarding how this flagship event should be presented."
