Here are summaries of the second-round meets:

WEST REGIONAL

Chandler AZ 98.67, Lee’s Summit West MO 37.33

The Titans could only manage victories from Makayla Kelby in the shot put and discus throw, along with Jessica Haney in the high jump, but the Arizona Division 1 champions prevailed in the other 13 events to secure another impressive win and return to the regional semifinals. Anaya Bailey excelled in the sprints, Morgan Foster was impressive in the distance events, Jai Gruenwald prevailed in both hurdles and contributed to Chandler’s success in the jumps, along with Tiana Poirier-Shelton.

McKinney North TX 85, Grandview CO 51

It was another great showcase for Grandview senior Brie Oakley in the distance events, securing victories against talented McKinney North freshman London Culbreath. But aside from Kennede Brown in the hurdles and Kylee Harr in the high jump, the Colorado 5A champions couldn’t build much momentum against the Bulldogs. Jania Martin was exceptional in the sprints and contributed to McKinney’s North sweep of the relays, with Elon’a Jones winning the long jump and Semia Britton capturing the triple jump.

Santa Margarita CA 70, Summit OR 66

The Oregon 5A champions relied on Camille Weaver and Haley Smith to grab an eight-point advantage in the field events and benefited from an Olivia Brooks-led sweep in the 3,200 to force Santa Margarita to win the 4x400 in order to advance, but California’s most versatile roster again called on the experience of Mallory Barnes, Erin Gerardo, Nikki Merritt and Lauren Drysch to rally for the victory. Barnes also won the triple jump and Kate Thomas prevailed in the pole vault for Santa Margarita, which overcame a 21-point deficit in the distance events and being swept in the shot put to move on to the next round.

DeSoto TX 70, Centennial NV 66

It was an unfamiliar position for the Nevada 4A champions to be in, having to win the 4x400 relay in order to secure victory. But that was the exact scenario the Texas 6A powerhouse was hoping would decide the exciting battle of two of the country’s most storied programs. Although Centennial controlled the distance events with Karina Haymore and Alexis Gourrier, and held the edge in the hurdles races behind Talie Bonds, DeSoto had enough of an advantage in the sprints, jumps and throws to support 10 crucial points in the relays. Jada Laye and Rosaline Effiong sparked the Fighting Eagles in the sprints, Taylor Armstrong and Kynnedy Brown were clutch in the jumps, with Brianna Washington and Samone Turner leading the way in the throws.

EAST REGIONAL

Union Catholic NJ 92, Warren Central IN 43

The Indiana state champions captured the shot put and discus with Deysha Anderson, along with Prommyse Hoosier winning the long jump, but those efforts weren’t nearly enough to overcome the New Jersey Non-Public A winners prevailing in all 10 track events. Amaya Chadwick, Leena Morant, Jerika Luefrano and Angelique Williams provided plenty of support for Union Catholic, allowing Sydney McLaughlin to take on a lighter schedule in preparation for bigger challenges in the next round.

Miami Northwestern FL 101, Withrow OH 24

The Ohio Division 1 champions could only manage wins from J’Alyiea Smith in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump as the Florida 3A winners posted the highest score of any team in the round to return to the regional semifinals. In addition to impressive efforts from Twanisha Terry, Ulani Toussaint, Markalah Hart and Taranique Alexander, Miami Northwestern also got distance wins from Ayoola Gbolade and Nina Burgos.

Western Branch VA 87.5, Westlake GA 39.5

After surviving a thrilling showdown with Miami Southridge FL in the opening round, Western Branch didn’t need to rely on similar heroics against the Georgia 7A champions. The Bruins received a sweep of both hurdles and both jumps from Jada Terrell, along with Sara Belamarich leading a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,200 for the Virginia 6A winners, who swept both relays. Kennedy Brown helped Westlake with victories in the 200 and 400, but aside from Jada Watson winning the high jump and Tai Brown prevailing in the 1,600, the Lions didn’t have enough depth to keep pace.

Bullis MD 69, Shenendehowa NY 67

Although the final margin was the closest of all the second-round matchups, that wasn’t the case in the events themselves. Bullis, the ISL/MAC winners, secured both relays and 11 of the 14 remaining events had the Bulldogs or the New York state champions sweeping the top three spots. In the three events the teams split, Bullis still held a 14-13 scoring advantage, helping offset Shenendehowa producing six sweeps to the Bulldogs’ five. Cierra Pyles was instrumental in the long jump and triple jump for Bullis, which relied on Lauryn Harris, Leah Phillips, Masai Russell and Shaniya Hall to win the 4x400 to secure the victory after Hannah Reale, Olivia Lomascolo and Charlotte Hartman had put Shenendehowa ahead with a sweep of the 3,200.
