Linet Masai to Also Get Medal Upgrade from 2008 Olympic 10,000 MetersPublished by
Linet Masai of Kenya to Receive Bronze Medal After Shalane Flanagan is Upgraded to Silver from Beijing 2008By Adam Kopet Shalane Flanagan was not the only casualty of the doping offenses of Elvan Abeylegesse from the 2008 Olympics. Kenyan Linet Masai, the original fourth-place finisher in the 10,000 meters, has now been awarded a bronze medal for her performance, according to The Daily Nation. Flanagan was awarded her silver medal Monday (read about it here). That leaves the bronze open to be awarded to Masai. She set Kenyan national and world junior records at 30:26.50. The disqualification of Abeylegesse, a runner from Turkey, was announced earlier this year. It has taken approximately six months for medals to be reallocated. Masai went on to win gold in the 10,000 at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships and she followed that up with a bronze medal performance, also in the 10,000, at the 2011 World Championships. This year Masai has spent her time taking care of her newborn daughter. She plans to return to competition next year, focusing on road races. More news |
