McLaughlin unanimous choice for girls POY

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's High School Girls Performer of the Year poll and DyeStat concurred.

Readers’ and Editors' Choice: Sydney McLaughlin

With 31.54 percent of the vote, Sydney McLaughlin won DyeStat's Readers’ Choice vote, beating Claudia Lane's second-place tally of 19.3 percent.

McLaughlin, in an incredibly rare post-Olympic Games senior year, put together a tremendous list of accomplishments within the glare of a high school track community that idolized her.

McLaughlin posed for photos and signed autographs at just about every public appearance she made in her Union Catholic NJ track uniform in 2017.

She joined Jenny Simpson, Emma Coburn and Brenda Martinez for a sensational world record indoor distance medley relay at the New Balance Boston Indoor Grand Prix. That event fueled speculation that McLaughlin was moments away from signing a professional contract.

Instead, she bucked the trend of top high school athletes and went after her goals. She smashed the national high school record in the indoor 300 meters. She flew to Los Angeles to take a one-and-done national record attempt at the 300-meter hurdles record, and smashed it.

She thrilled fans at the Penn Relays with a pair of 50-second relay legs.

She doubled in 22.96 and 51.88 at her Group Championships in New Jersey.

She went to New Balance Nationals Outdoor and ran a historic 49.85 relay leg on UC's winning Swedish medley relay. She ran a personal-best and national record 53.82 for sixth place in the 400-meter hurdles at the USTAF Outdoor Championships in an epic final.

And she arrived at the Univesity of Kentucky in the fall, just as she said she would all along.
