National records tumble at Virginia Showcase

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Katelyn Tuohy smashed Brie Oakley's 10-month old national high school record in the indoor 5,000 meters by clocking a time of 15:37 on Saturday at the Virginia Showcase in Lynchburg.

The sophomore from North Rockland NY ran 9:16 en route for 3,000 meters and 9:54 for 3,200 meters.

"My goal was to break the national record (today)," Tuohy said. "That's why I came down here."

Her 5K time is also superior to the outdoor record 15:45.46 that Mary Cain ran in 2013.

"I went out a little fast," Tuohy said. "Looking back I would have tried to run more even splits. Starting out I was running 36-high per lap and toward the end I was definitely feeling those fast laps."

Tuohy wasn't alone making headlines at the Virginia Showcase, on the campus of Liberty University.

Brian Herron of Lakeside DeKalb GA broke the national high school record in the 300 meters with his time of 32.64 seconds.

Second-place finisher Eric Allen Jr of Bullis MD ran 32.84 for No. 2 on the all-time list.

And Tyrese Cooper, who broke the record in 2017 with 32.87, was third in the race. He ran 33.12.

The Bullis girls 4x200 relay also had a huge day and took down a 2003 Long Beach Poly CA record by cruising to a time of 1:35.39. LB Poly ran 1:35.86 and was the only previous team in history to go under 1:36. Later, Bullis ran No. 2 all-time 3:39.60 in the 4x400 relay.

Masai Russell of Bullis had a breakout performance. In addition to her work on the fantastic relay performances, she also ran US#1 7.84 in the 55-meter hurdles.

In the boys 1,000 meters, Josh Hoey of Bishop Shanahan PA ran 2:24.65 for No. 10 all-time.

Thelma Davies of Girard College PA ran US#1 6.77 to win the girls 55-meter dash.

Brendon Stewart of DeMatha Catholic MD ran US#2 6.35 in the boys 55.

Grant Northcutt of Cosby VA won the 2-mile in a US#1 time of 9:14.80.

Sam Affolder anchored Loudoun Valley to a US#1 time of 10:02.58 in the distance medley relay.
