World pentathlon leader Bougard leads Americans in pursuit of medals in Birmingham

Following her world-leading 4,760-point performance to secure back-to-back pentathlon titles Friday at the USATF Indoor Championships in New Mexico, Erica Bougard was one of three Americans selected to compete in the multi-events at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, U.K.

Bougard is joined in the pentathlon by four-time NCAA Indoor winner and USATF runner-up Kendell Williams, who placed sixth at the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland, Ore.

Also representing the U.S. in the men's heptathlon is Zach Ziemek, who boasts the second-highest score in the world this year at 6,043 points. Ziemek didn't compete in Albuquerque, but his score from Feb. 2-3 in Nebraska is more than 100 points higher than the winning score in New Mexico by USATF heptathlon champion Jeremy Taiwo.

Ziemek is looking to continue an exceptional run by American multi-event athletes at World Indoors, with Ashton Eaton winning the past three gold medals in 2012, 2014 and 2016 after Bryan Clay captured the title in 2008 and 2010. Tom Pappas also won heptathlon gold for the U.S. in 2003 in Birmingham.

A victory by Bougard or Williams would end a lengthy drought for the Americans in the pentathlon, with LeShundra Nathan capturing the only World Indoor gold medal for the U.S. in 1999. The last American medal in the pentathlon was Hyleas Fountain earning bronze in 2010.

Joining Bougard and Williams will be Czech Republic's Katerina Cachova and Eliska Klucinova, Switzerland's Caroline Agnou, Austria's Ivona Dadic, France's Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida, Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Hungary's Xenia Krizsan, Portugal's Lecabela Quaresma, Cuba's Yorgelis Rodriguez and Ukraine's Alina Shukh.

Along with Ziemek will be France's Kevin Mayer and Ruben Gado, Grenada's Lindon Victor and Kurt Felix, Austria's Dominique Distelberger, Czech Republic's Jan Dolezal, Ukraine's Oleksiy Kasyanov, Germany's Kai Kazmarek, Estonia's Maicel Uibo, Canada's Damian Warner and Dutch standout Eelco Sintnicolaas.

There will be new champions crowned in both multi-event competitions in Birmingham, with Canada's Brianne Theisen-Eaton and American Ashton Eaton both retiring.
