High School Class and World Records Earn This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Katelyn Tuohy

With 19.46 percent of the vote, Katelyn Tuohy won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating the Poland men with their second-place tally of 17.84 percent.

Tuohy has now twice run faster than Mary Cain's sophomore national record in the 1,500 meters. The most recent time came at the New York State Indoor Championship where she ran 4:23.38. That was an improvement on her previous record by about half a second.

Tuohy has followed up her monumental cross country season with a strong indoor season. The only blemish on her indoor campaign came at the NYRR Millrose Games where she faded late to finish fourth in the mile. Otherwise, she is undefeated in events of at least 1,000 meters.

Next up for Tuohy is the New Balance Nationals Indoor. She will compete in the 2-mile championship and in the sprint medley and distance medley championship relays with her North Rockland NY teammates.

New Balance Nationals Indoor will be broadcast live. Click here for more information.

Editors’ Choice: Poland Men

With all the great performances this week, one stands out in particular. The Poland men upsetting the USA in the men's 4x400 relay was rare enough, but Poland did so with a new world indoor record.

The quartet of Karol ZalewskiRafal OmelcoLukasz Krawczuk and Jakub Krzewina chopped 0.19 seconds off the old record, held by the United States since 2006.

The race began with an amazingly fast lead off leg by American Fred Kerley. He opened the race with a sub-45-second clocking, the fastest in history. No other team was close and it looked like the USA men were on their way to a dominant victory.

However, Omelco and Krawczuk slowly closed the gap on the Americans to the point that Krzewina got the baton on the anchor leg just a step behind American Vernon Norwood.

The final leg was an example of contrasting styles. Norwood took off, opening the lead on the Polish team once again. The bell rung with at least a 15-meter gap separating the two teams.

But the final lap belonged to Krzewina. He closed hard in the final 200 meters and caught Norwood coming off the final bend. At that point, Norwood was spent and Krzewina had all the momentum. He crossed the line with both arms raised in celebration, only finding out after the race that he and his teammates were now world indoor record holders.

For their surprise win and record, the Poland men's 4x400 relay team are this week's Editors' Choice award winners.
