Marathon and 100-Meter Performances Earn This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Malcolm Richards

With 32.53 percent of the vote, Malcolm Richards won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Brooke Andersen with her second-place tally of 28.03 percent.

Malcolm Richards continued the trend of breaking the world record for the indoor marathon at the Armory NYC Indoor Marathon Presented by NYRR. In all three years of the event, the record has been broken.

Richards set the initial record at the Armory in 2016, winning the race in 2:21:56. However, a year later, it was Chris Zablocki who won, beating Richards' time by eight seconds.

Richards returned in the third edition of the event with a mission. After running most of the first half of the race in the main pack, which included Zablocki, Richards made a bold move. He put in a surge and never looked back.

Throughout the second half of the race, Richards' lead continued to grow. His final laps, of the 211 he completed, fell off his earlier pace, but by then it was too late for anyone to catch him.

Richards crossed the finish line in 2:19:1.9 to take more than two minutes off Zablocki's record.

Editors’ Choice: Briana Williams

This week's decision for the Editors' Choice award came down to Clarence Munyai and Briana Williams. Both broke major records in the sprints last week.

Munyai shattered Wayde van Niekerk's South African 200-meter record of 19.84 at the South African Championships Friday with his 19.69 semifinal clocking. Munyai turned 20 last month, making him one of the fastest 20-year olds ever. Only American Xavier Carter ran faster as a 20-year old, clocking 19.63.

However, this week's Editors' Choice award goes to Williams. The Northeast (Oakland Park) FL sophomore from Jamaica won the 100-meter dash at the Bob Hayes Invitational. Her time, 11.13 broke Marion Jones' world age-15 best 11.17 from 1991. The wind was a legal +1.7 meters per second.

Additionally, Williams' performance equaled the No. 5 prep all-time performance.

Williams has been no stranger to fast times. She ran 11.30 in Kingston, Jamaica last year. This season, she had previously run 11.53 into a headwind in Jamaica two weeks ago.

Williams is coached by Ato Boldon. She has been a known factor in Florida since she was an elementary school student, but is only now making a mark on the high school stage.
