Impressive Hurdle and Distance Performances Earn This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Khallifah Rosser

With 40.56 percent of the vote, Khallifah Rosser won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Geoffrey Kamworor with his second-place tally of 26.92 percent.

Rosser missed the entire 2017 outdoor season and the 2018 indoor season with injury. However, the Cal State Los Angeles senior has returned to action and is showing he can once again win NCAA Division 2 Outdoor Championships titles and compete on the national stage.

Competing at the 40th Aztec Invitational at San Diego State, Rosser broke his meet record from two years ago in the 400-meter hurdles, running 49.61. That puts him ahead of pace from a season that saw him run 49.04 and reach the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles at the Olympic Trials.

In the race, Rosser went unchallenged as he essentially led from the gun. He won by over two seconds.

In addition to his strong run in Saturday's invitational section of the 400-meter hurdles, Rosser competed for his team in Friday's open sections of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Editors’ Choice: Geoffrey Kamworor

This week's Editors' Choice award came down to two athletes, Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya and Tom Walsh of New Zealand.

After winning the shot put at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, Walsh has returned to New Zealand for a series of outdoor competitions in preparation for next week's Commonwealth Games. Competing at the Sir Graeme Douglas International Track and Field Challenge, Walsh extended his world lead in the shot with a mark of 74-4.50 (22.67m). That is the longest shot put in 15 years and could lead to a great showdown with Ryan Crouser this summer in the Diamond League.

However, this week's award goes to Kamworor, who won his third straight IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. This year's edition of the biennial event was held in Valencia, Spain, and attracted some of the top half-marathoners in the world.

If there was any question as to who the best in the field was, there was little doubt over the final six kilometers as Kamworor pulled away to win in 1:00:02.

Strong winds and rain showers helped keep the race slow at the start. But it was those same winds that helped Kamworor to cover the 5-kilometer split from 15 to 20 kilometers in an eye-popping 13:01, as the winds aided the runners in the second half of the race. Kamworor made his move at the 15-kilometer marker and never needed to look back.

In the end, Kamworor had the finishing straight to himself. He crossed the finish line 20 seconds ahead of second-place Abraham Cheroben of Bahrain.
