Sydney McLaughlin said throughout the indoor season that it was all preparation for the goals she hoped to accomplish outdoors.

The Kentucky freshman made an immediate impact Thursday in her outdoor debut at the Pepsi Florida Relays, clocking a wind-legal 22.39 seconds in the 200 meters at Percy Beard Track, the second-fastest time in the world this year, trailing only Nigerian star Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor and her 22.04 from the Wes Kittley Invitational on Saturday at Abilene Christian in Texas.

McLaughlin ran the fastest low-altitude 200 by an American U20 athlete, surpassing the 22.43 by Bianca Knight in 2008, and ranks No. 4 all-time among World U20 performers. Allyson Felix set the World U20 record by clocking 22.11 at altitude in Mexico City in 2003.

McLaughlin also produced the second-fastest time by a collegiate freshman, trailing only the 22.21 run by Oregon’s Ariana Washington to win the 2016 NCAA Division 1 title. McLaughlin equaled the No. 16 all-time collegiate wind-legal performer in the 200.

McLaughlin prevailed against professionals Joanna Atkins and Keni Harrison, who both clocked 22.81. Kentucky junior Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won her section in a wind-aided 22.59.

In the men’s 200, Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas ran a wind-legal personal-best 20.20 to triumph against Jamaica’s Omar McLeod in 20.49.
