Quincy Hall enjoyed the breakthrough performance of his career last season by winning the 400 meters at the Stanford Invitational.

The College of Sequoias sophomore decided to take on an even bigger challenge Friday by competing in the men’s 400 hurdles against meet record-holder Jeshua Anderson and Trinidad and Tobago star Jehue Gordon.

Hall barely missed Anderson’s 2010 record by one-hundredth, clocking 49.65 to move into the top 15 in the world this year and just behind Cal State L.A. standout Khallifah Rosser (49.61) as the fastest American.

Hall, the reigning California Community College Athletic Association state champion in the 400 meters and 400 hurdles, ran 45.32 in the 400 to set the meet record last season.

Anderson and Gordon both have career bests under 48 seconds, but it was Hall who rallied over the final two hurdles to edge Anderson (49.96) and pull away from Gordon (51.21). Hall, who broke the 50-second barrier for the third time in his career, ran a lifetime-best 49.02 in July to win the Pan-American U20 gold medal.

Alabama junior Vincent Kiprop lowered his own personal best from last year’s Mt. SAC Relays to clock 28:19.07, leading three Crimson Tide runners in the top five, along with third-place Gilbert Kigen (28:27.31) and fifth-place Sam Chelgana (28:32.66). Lopez Lomong, 33, finished second in 28:21.37.

Boise State’s Yusuke Uchikoshi won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in a collegiate-leading 8:38.82, with BYU securing three of the next five spots.

Matt Owens ran 8:39.41 in his steeplechase debut, Daniel Carney clocked 8:42.17 and Jacob Heslington produced an 8:43.41 to complete the top five. BYU already has seven NCAA Division 1 West Regional qualifiers in the steeplechase.

Tennessee’s Zach Long held off Canadian talent Luc Bruchet to win the men’s 5,000, prevailing 13:39.22 to 13:39.62, with Northern Arizona’s Tyler Day third in 13:40.22, just ahead of Colorado State’s Cole Rockhold (13:40.29) and adidas professional George Parsons (13:40.37).

Former Princeton star Peter Callahan, representing Belgium, secured victory in the 1,500 in 3:38.41. Drew Hunter, an adidas professional, placed second in 3:39.49 in his first race in six months. Oregon’s trio of Sam Prakel (3:39.75), Mick Stanovsek (3:39.96) and Reed Brown (3:40.28) all finished in the top five.

Misana Viltz, who is redshirting this season at Cal after transferring from UCLA, won the men’s 110 hurdles competing unattached in 13.85. Myles Ellis of American River College won the 400 in 47.80.

Stanford was victorious in the men’s long jump with Jaak Uudmae leaping 24-7 (7.49m) in the fourth round.
North Dakota State’s Payton Otterdahl won the discus with a first-round throw of 184-10 (56.33m) and Chico State’s Tyler Arroyo cleared 7-1.50 (2.17m).

Dejan Mileusnic of Bosnia & Herzegovina won the javelin with a third-round effort of 247-9 (75.52m).
