Long time Track and Field News writer Jon Hendershott dies By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor It's been an uncomfortable and sad week learning that Jon Hendershott suffered a stroke Sunday and died Monday evening. Just a day before his stroke, I saw him and briefly spoke to him at Hayward Field where a college track meet, the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational, was happening despite a miserable weather day full of rain and wind. Jon seemed fine, happy to be at the track and amid the athletes that he wrote about and adored being around for decades. Some of you out there obviously know him. He spent 48 years working for Track and Field News magazine. Track was one of his passions. Others of you might not have known him. I can personally relate that he was a very kind man with a very deep reservoir of knowledge and personal history in the sport. His father was a pole vaulter at the University of Oregon in the 1930s, trained by Bill Hayward. He had been around the globe and chronicled track and field for a long time. He covered nine Olympic Games. He was 71. Our best wishes go out to his family and his many friends. More news
