High School State Meet Performances Earn This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Mondo Duplantis

With 30.13 percent of the vote, Mondo Duplantis won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Galen Rupp with his second-place tally of 24.30 percent.

Duplantis did it again this week, breaking his own high school and World U20 pole vault record at the Louisiana 5A State Meet. He cleared 19-5.50 (5.93m) to add another half inch to his record.

The new record clearance is the second highest in the world this year, only behind French world record holder Renaud Lavillenie, who cleared 19-6.25 (5.95m) on April 14 at the Texas Invitational.

This was Duplantis' third time clearing better than 19-4 (5.89m) in his career. He achieved 19-4.25 (5.90m) at last year's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. He bettered that at this year's Texas Relays, clearing 19-5 (5.92m), equaling what was then the world best, despite finishing third to Lavillenie and Shawn Barber on misses.

Duplantis, an LSU signee, also competed in the 100 meters, finishing eighth in the final with a wind-aided time of 10.74.

The Louisiana State Meet was his final meet competing for his high school, Lafayette LA. Duplantis will now turn his attention to the Diamond League circuit. He is scheduled to compete at the Prefontaine Classic, the Eugene Diamond League meeting, and the Stockholm Diamond League meeting. Duplantis competes internationally for Sweden.

Editors’ Choice: Tamari Davis

Tamari Davis, the Gainesville FL freshman, ran a big personal best at the Florida 3A State Meet this weekend in the 200 meters to earn this week's Editors' Choice award. She took 0.58 seconds off her personal best, running 22.48 with a legal 1.9m/s tailwind.

That time shattered the freshman class record, which Davis had equaled earlier in the season with a time of 23.06. It also broke the Florida state record held by Kaylin Whitney by 0.01 seconds. Davis is now third on the all-time prep list behind Allyson Felix and Candace Hill. She ranks third all-time on the World U18 list and 10th in World U20 history.

Additionally, Davis currently sits ninth on the world list this year behind Kentucky freshman Sydney McLaughlin. All the other women in the top 10 so far this year are either compete collegiately or professionally. And Davis is only 15 years old.

Davis also competed in the 100 meters. She finished second to Northeast FL sophomore Bianca Williams by 0.05 seconds, running 11.36 into a 0.9m/s headwind. Davis has a personal best this season of 11.29. Williams has run 11.13. They are the top two 100- and 200-meter high school runners in the country this year.
