A Final Weekend at Western Branch for Coach 'Touks'

Katelyn Tuohy Has Chance To Be Top-10 in Both Mile and 2-Mile

Friday

The championship 5,000 meters races featured impressive wins by athletes who would not have been labeled favorites. Freshman Heidi Nielson of Cinco Ranch used a push in the final 1,000 meters to break away from the talented Hubner twins of New Jersey -- Monica and Isabelle -- and won the girls race in 16:55.

Defending champion Ryan Oosting a junior from Arlington MA had the lead on the final lap, but a familar face was right behind him. Andrew Mah, a senior who is headed to MIT in the fall, calcuated that he was in prime position to overtake Oosting in the final 200 meters and had a very strong kick to the finish to clock in at 14:32.

The Friday session closed with the first mixed gender 4x400 relay at NBNO, and Western Branch seized the opportunity to show its tremendous depth, going 1-2 with A and B squads both running 3:28.

Saturday

The night was capped by an epic boys 4x800 relay, in which Northport NY (Cow Harbor TC) anchor Isaiah Claiborne surged past Green Hope NC (Western Cary TC) star Ian Delgado to win in 7:31.62. That's good for No. 5 all-time. Green Hope ran 7:32.06 for No. 6 all-time.

Earlier, Western Branch VA and Bullis MD clocked the two fastest times ever in the girls shuttle hurdles with 54.67 and 54.95. Western Branch is headed for a big weekend with outgoing coach Claude Toukene. Bullis, which beat Western Branch at the indoor championships, was competeing without Masai Russell, who was at USATF Juniors on Saturday.

The girls 2-mile was also a highlight, with Maddy Denner taking a hard-faught win in 10:04.53. There was a mishap with 600 meters left that sent Olivia Theis crashing to the ground and Denner with a spike gash on the back of her right ankle. Denner took 12 stitches to fix the cut. Her twin sister, Elena, the California state 3,200 meters champion, was third in 10:05.68. Junior Emily Covert lowered her own Minnesota state record for second with 10:05.19.
