National Girls High School Team Rankings - 10/11Published by
Naperville (North) IL Girls Ascend To No. 1 By Adam Kopet of DyeStat Wayzata MN's fourth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational caused a big shake up at the top of the rankings. Interestingly, however, the two teams that appear ready to take on the mantle of being the top team in the country have both suffered recent losses as well. Naperville (North) IL takes the top spot, despite finishing second to Yorkville IL at Roy Griak. However, the Huskies turned the tables on Yorkville four days later at the Naperville Twilight Invitational. Right behind Naperville (North) is Great Oak CA. The Wolfpack finished second to Boise ID at the Bob Firman Invitational in September. However, it was not the team's best race. Great Oak bounced back and won the last week's ASICS Clovis Invitational. Despite Great Oak's No. 2 ranking, it may not finish the season as the best team from California. Claremont CA, also known as the Wolfpack, won the Stanford Invitational and now sits at No. 3 in the nation. It will be a close contest between the top two California schools this season. Two previously unranked teams entered the top 15 this week following strong performances. La Costa Canyon CA sits at No. 12 after it finished second at the Stanford Invitational. Lee's Summit West MO makes its move after winning the McQuaid Invitational in New York. The Titans are led by senior transfer from Sprague OR, Ginger Murnieks, giving them a low stick that makes them nationally competitive at No. 13. Saturday's Manhattan High School Cross Country Invitational should be illuminating. Traditionally this has been a showcase meet for Fayetteville-Manlius NY, the 11-time NXN champions. The Hornets appear to be having a down year, but a fuller picture of what this year's team can do should be revealed, although F-M won't be competing in the Eastern States Championship race. Four regions dominate this week's rankings. The Midwest and Northwest regions and California each have six ranked teams. The Southwest region is not far behind with five teams in the top 30. Those numbers are even clearer at the top of the rankings with those four regions making up the entire first 10. Girls Top 30 |
