DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Central Valley WA Kamiakin WA
Current Prediction: Kamiakin WA Lewis and Clark WA
Note: The teams from the state of Washington dominated the NXR Northwest from 2004 through 2014, winning every regional title and claiming 20 of the 30 NXN bids during that span. After being shut out for two years, Washington teams took over again in 2017 and claimed both NXN bids. Saturday could see more of the same as the top three ranked teams are all from Washington. Of that group, Kamiakin is the clear favorite and has been ranked at the top of the region for most of the year. Just behind Kamiakin is a pack of competitive teams in Tahoma, Central Valley, Camas and Lewis and Clark. All of these teams, including Kamiakin, finished within five seconds of each other in their 1-5 team averages at the Washington state meet. All of these teams will step to the line Saturday with making it to NXN a realistic goal. Also in the mix are two teams from Oregon. Central Catholic and Jesuit each scored 93 points in the Oregon 6A meet and separated themselves from the rest of the state. Both of these teams are within striking distance of the top Washington teams. There are also three strong teams from the host state of Idaho. Rocky Mountain, Timberline and Idaho Falls all have an outside chance of making history and becoming the first team from the state to advance to nationals. Top teams from Idaho have typically finished a tier below the elite teams, but it would not be a great surprise if this year saw a change. The DyeStat picks are Kamiakin and Lewis and Clark. It would be an upset if Kamiakin doesn't secure one of the spots. Lewis and Clark gets the pick based on its potential if all the teams listed run well. Add Redmond WA and North Central WA to this list and there is no less than 12 teams that could put together a team race capable of earning a trip to Portland.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Jesuit OR Summit OR
Current Prediction: Summit OR Boise ID
Note: The Northwest is one of the deepest regions in the country this year. As of this week's national rankings, six Northwest teams were ranked in the national top 20. Summit OR moved up to the top spot this week after winning the Oregon 6A title. The Storm have been one of the most consistent teams in the country this year even with adversity. However, this is not just a region with the top nationally ranked team. The depth is incredible, with No. 5 Boise ID, No. 7 Jesuit OR and No. 11 North Central WA. It seems likely this region could produce one or even two at-large selections this year. And be sure to watch out for Hellgate MT. The No. 16 ranked team has been bolstered by the transfer of former Sunset OR runner Ember Stratton, who finished runner-up at NXN in 2016. Montana has done particularly well at NXR Northwest in recent years, adding to the chances of an upset. |
