HIGH SCHOOL RACES

E-mail messages about steeple races for high school girls have come to us recently from widespread places such as California, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Our reply includes citing National HS Federation Rule 8.2 recognizing the steeple as a special event that can be included in high school meets. Now the updated schedule below includes such races for HS girls on March 18 and May 20. More are expected to follow.

CANADA & USA SCHEDULE

Below is our updated schedule of 34 track meets in Canada and the USA expected to offer a women's steeplechase during the year 2000. But Texas Relays steeple is for college and university; it's not open to postgraduate club and unattached runners. Most dates are Saturday; some are indicated otherwise. Race distance is 3000 meters unless marked 2k to indicate 2000 meters. The 24-hour clock is used, e.g. 1900 = 7 p.m.

USA OLYMPIC TRIALS

Details and entry form had been available at http://www.sacsports.com/trials/entry.html  but that website site is temporarily disabled. USATF is investigating the problem. We are still trying to determine who set the website entry standard for women's steeple at 10:38, a time achieved in a valid race by only four USA women last year, so we can discuss an appropriate adjustment before resuming publication of our weekly updated qualifiers list.

That website had said qualifying marks for entry into the trials must meet World Record conditions; that would include "doping control." We have since been advised by USATF Rules Chair Bob Hersh, "I can assure you that there has never been any intention that doping control be required in order for performances to be accepted as qualifying marks [for] the USATF Championships or Olympic Team Trials competition."

UPDATE

Last week's publication of "our all-time list of Best USA Performers in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase has brought a note that "Stacy" Brunton is actually "Staci" and that the team name "Reebok" should be "Reebok Aggies" for Brunton, Teressa DiPerna, Rae Henderson, and Monica Townsend when their times were run in 1996.

GLOBAL NEWS

Some steeple times are coming to us from Australian lists that use a fiscal year, 1 April 99 through 31 March 2000, reflecting the summer season there now. But without meet dates and cities we can't identify new marks to produce our year 2000 world list. We hope to sort this out for our next report. Stay tuned.

WINTER TRAINING TIP

A distinctive characteristic of good steepling is hurdling endurance to leap the 35 barriers in a 3000-meter steeple or even the 20 in a 2000m event. Developing such endurance can be hard for those who live in harsh winter regions. (Indoor track meets that include a steeplechase have been reported to us during recent years from only Russia and Eugene, Oregon.) So consider practicing with regular hurdles in an indoor gym even though they are placed much closer together than steeple barriers outdoors. Continuing clearances help develop specific muscular endurance.
