SCHEDULE ADDITIONS

Eleven more steeplechase competitions for girls and women have been announced since our season schedule published in Steeple Report dated 31 Jan 2000. Our schedule now shows 45 steeple races for female athletes in the USA and Canada.

Liz Howell, Women's Track and Field Administrator at the University of Oregon in Eugene, sent us her tentative schedule of four meets with a women's 3000-meter steeple this spring: March 11, April 8, April 29, May 13. Steeplers and coaches can contact Ms. Howell at .

Mia Pollard, VCU head coach of women's track, wrote that the new VCU track facility in Richmond is "equipped to run the women's steeplechase. Our barriers are adjustable." She's ready to include the women's steeplechase at the Ram Invitational meets of March 18 and May 6 if there's interest. Steeplers and coaches can contact Ms. Pollard at .

Cedric Walker of Niagara USATF wrote that three meets at Benjamin Franklin High School in Rochester, New York, will include a 2000-meter steeplechase for HS girls. The dates are April 8, May 6, and May 13. Contact details will be in third edition of the season schedule in our Steeple Report this month.

Lloyd Pugh at Bremerton (Washington) High School wrote that his work on home-made barriers and water jump is progressing and that a 2000-meter steeple races will be held for girls and boys on March 25 at Bremerton's big Relays meet.

Ed Parrot wrote, "We are planning on having a Steeple at the East Regional USATF Open meet on July 9th. ... both a men's and women's 3000m. We have adjustable barriers and water jump ... The meet will be in in New London at Connecticut College. For more info, including contact, go to

Planning continues or even more steeple races across the USA. When sending schedule updates, please include race site and time, entry fee, and contact person's e-mail address or phone number as shown above. The full schedule will be published again, with updates, in the next Steeple Report near the end of February. Entry details for USA Championship steeple 17 July 2000 are at

MORE ON WINTER TRAINING

Dr. Wayne T. Armbrust wrote with a postscript to our thoughts in the previous report about indoor steepling practice: "You might be interested in what I did with the steeplechasers that I worked with in Columbus when I coached the Ohio Track Club. We would space 5 hurdles set at 36 inches around the 200 m indoor track 40 m apart, and place them just far enough from the curb so that a runner could get by them on the inside. The athlete would do repeats, typically 400 m, jumping every other hurdle and running inside the ones not jumped. In this way the runner would take a hurdle each 80 m or 5 hurdles per 400 m simulating the barrier spacing in the steeplechase on an outdoor track. This worked out pretty well."

RULES

Last week the website for USA Track and Field added a "Summary of 2000 Competition Rules Changes." It states, "Because 1999 was an odd-numbered year, the Rules Committee considered only the few items that had been tabled in 1998 as well as a few others that had been proposed in order to [comply with] IAAF or WAVA rules. The following rule changes were made at USATF's 1999 Annual Meeting and are incorporated in the 2000 USATF Competition Rules Book."

NO changes were listed for USATF Rule 81 - Steeplechase. So the much-discussed "short pit" of 3.06m (10 feet) for female steeplers is still not mandated; that's good news for the majority of USA meet site managers whose pits are the standard 3.66m (12 feet) used for 100 years. Height of women's barriers remains at 76.2 cm (30 inches).

There were also no changes to USATF Rule 10.2 which lists the 3000-meter steeple as a women's standard event for both the Senior (Open) and Junior (under age 20) National Champioships as well as Regional and Association Championships. And there was no change to Rule 75.1(c) including its guideline of 18 steeplers for a finals-only national championship race but, if more than 18 report, heats shall be run and the final will be 14 steeplers.
