2,300 compete in 40th M-D Games

Over 2300 runners from 148 schools competed in the 40th edition of the Mason Dixon Games.

GIRLS

Fleming County's girls repeated as AA champions with state titles in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays along with runnerup spots in the 400 and 800 from Christy Richmond. Rockcastle County, coming off its strong middle school showing Friday night, garnered second place with Clarissa Hubbard winning the shot put(34-11.5). Jessica Southers of Russell broke the AA state record in the 1500, Carmen Haynes of Western Hills broke her own record in the pole vault(7-6) and Western Hills Kristen Herron was a double winner in the horizontal jumps (15-8.5 and 34-4.5).

Bishop Brossart returned to the top of the Class A girls with the help of wins by Christy Studer in the pole vault(Class A record 6-9), Cherissa Kopp in the triple jump(31-5) as well as the 4x400 relay(4:31.3). Brossart scored in 13 of the 14 events to run away with the title. Kelley Bowman led surprising Berea to the runnerup spot with a Class A state record in the high jump of 5'6" as well as winning the long jump(15-5.75). Bowman also captured second place in the 400 losing out at the wire as Frankfort's Jackie Gordon put on a ferocious kick from 10 yards off the pace to win by .2 seconds.

Marshall County's girls pulled the upset of the day riding the strength of their distance runners and field events to upset favored Ballard. Melissa Loveridge lead the distances runners with two strong second places behind South Oldham's Alli Sauer in the 1500 and 3000. Sauer set the AAA state record in the 1500 (4:52.2) and just missed the record in the 3000(10:29.4). Lauren Rosa took the title in the long jump and finished second in the triple jump while Reagan Seaford finished second to new state record holder Jacey Hughes of Daviess County(9'3"). Ballard got wins in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays(AAA state record 4:12.9), as well as state AAA records from Rosalind Goodwin in the triple jump(36-8) and Jordan Wagenseller in the 800(2:22.9).

BOYS

First year Coach Randy Wyatt continued the Paducah Tilghman tradition of track & field dominance taking Tilghman to their 20th indoor and outdoor state championship with Dee Gray winning the 400(53.5), Michael Goodwin winning the high jump(6-0) as well as the 4x200(1:36.2) and 4x400(3:37.0) relays sweeping. Western Hills Eric Cockley raised the AA state record to 13-6 while Chris Young of Allen County-Scottsville swept the 1500(4:17.0) and 3000(9:18.4). Billy Taylor of Logan County was also a double winner in the 55(6.71) and long jump (20-3.5).

Class A boys provided most of the fireworks with Frankfort leading the entire meet going in to the 4x400 relay. With Campbellsville and Newport Central Catholic trailing Frankfort by two points going in to the 4x400, all three teams went head to head in the final race. Campbellsville and Newport Central exchanged leads several times during the race with Campbellsville Jesse Thomas anchoring the Tigers to the win and state championship. Frankfort finished fifth in the heat and dropped to third place. Campbellsville's only other win came in the 4x200 relay. Newport Central got wins fromVail Brennan in the triple jump, Mike Williams in the 400. Frankfort's 4x800 relay win led off the meet and also got a win by Daniel Fitzgerald in the high jump.

North Hardin and Lexington Lafayette displaced perennial powers Daviess County and Male in AAA boys. Lafayette won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays and Tyson Gay, a member of both relays, also won the 400 and finished second(6.42) to Oldham County's Ben Kittleson(6.40) in the 55 meter dash. Kittleson's time ranks him #12 in the nation. North Hardin won only the triple jump(Byron Lewis 46-2) and 800(Stuart Furlow 2:03.0) but scored in eleven of the fourteen events.David Altmaier continued his in state dominance in the distance races sweeping the 1500(4:10.8) and 3000(9:08.6).

Rockcastle Middle School's girls and Burns Middle School(Owensboro) boys dominated the Friday night middle school events. Rockcastle was led by double winner Sheena Swinney in the 55(7.8) and 200(27.9). Burns was led by its record setting 4x200 relay team(1:47.3). Wes Coleman of West Jessamine was a double winner in the 55(7.2) and shattering the meet record in the long jump(19' .5")
