3/27/00 ReportResults and other newsResults - Northwest Relays - USA National Steeple - Steeple Web Sites - About Us RESULTSon 25 March 2000 Australian Underage Championships Hobart, Stockton College - Pomona, New Jersey 2000 meter steeplechase: But a 3km April 8 at Wheeling (West VA) Jesuit Univ. meet has attracted some good regional runners. Entries close April 4 via kreger@cet.edu. So the New Jersey race needs more northeast entrants from its New York and Connecticut neighbors. Stanford Invitational 3 km - Palo Alto, California Meet Director wrote that the race was canceled; "We've only had three entrants in each of the past two years. I would like to take this opportunity to solicit your suggestions on how we can increase our field sizes for this race for the future. Your thoughts are welcomed." Correction -- He also pointed out that "The 9:50 listed as the entry standard in our meet packet refers to the women's 3000 meter run (not the steeplechase). I will try to make that distinction clearer in next year's packet." Editor's note: If steeplers on this list have suggestions for increasing the number of entrants, please send them to me; I will compile them into a list and send it to the director in response to his gracious offer. Although I have directed many meets, plus national championship events and USA Olympic Trials for racewalk, my thoughts may not be as helpful as those from the affected athletes. Write soon, please. High School Relay Classic - Bremerton, WA. The meet director sent us regrets that maintenance staff did not get a water jump constructed for the 2km steeple in his March 25th meet and added that any results would have been invalid. "We do have adjustable barriers, but without the water the marks will mean nothing." Editor: The water jump continues to be a barrier to meet management as well as steeplers. The Bremerton plans included adjusting the length (width of water to be jumped) for female athletes, a technical requirement frustrating other venue managers. NORTHWEST RELAYSFurther north in Washington State, the one USA women's 3000m steeple scheduled on April 1 starts at 1000. It's the first ever for women in the Pacific Northwest Association of USATF and the first of three that month at Western Washington University in Bellngham -- a location that could draw some entrants from Western Canada. The other two are at meets on April 7 and 28. The WWU steeple on April 7 is actually part of the revived Northwest Relays announced by Bill Roe, vice president of USA Track & Field. Roe wrote, "This new birth of the Relays is intended to begin a Puget Sound event comparable to the big relay meets of the midwest and east. The 2001 date has already been set at Friday-Sunday, April 6-7-8" and would be held entirely in the Seattle area. This year most of the meet is nearby in Edmonds where a steeplechase water pit is among elements planned for 2001. The steeple, hammer, and 10 km runs are Friday evening, 7 April 2000, at Bellingham; the rest of the meet is on Saturday in Edmonds. The steeplechase will be offered to four divisions: Girls, Women, Boys, and Men. But that does not mean mixed-sex races whose marks would not qualify for nationals. The female event starts at 1800; the males compete at 1815. Contact Bill.Roe@wwu.edu for details; entry deadline is Tuesday, 4 April 2000. USA NATIONAL STEEPLEWe get questions: "Where do they have the qualifying standard listed for the Oly trials? I see you list 10:38, but I am curious to know where it is posted for people. I thought I looked thoroughly through the trials web site among other places." The 10:38 entry standard for women's national steeplechase championship on 17 July 2000 is at http://www.sacsports.com/trials/entry.html. But it does not use the website convention of internal links to disparate content such as the steeple championship and standard. Instead, you must scroll for a long time until you find the steeple material relatively deep in that file. That procedure puts so much material in one download that it might overflow the register setting on older computers with early versions of software. If the problem persists, I will edit the relevant content for a concise version in the Steeple Report. Of course, we hope that the 10:38 standard will be eased -- if the responsible person can be identified. The International Amateur Athletic Federation requires breaking 11 minutes flat to be ranked in the current World Top 10 List for 3000m steeple, quite a contrast to that 10:38 merely to enter USA nationals.
