Texas State Meet - Day 1

Before a brilliant lightning storm stopped proceedings late in the evening, there were fireworks on the track and field to entertain the big crowd at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin:  Some highlights::

  • 4A Boys 200: Texas has seven of the US top 10 and five of them were in this race.  Hometown soph Brendan Christian, fastest US sophomore ever with his 20.72 in the regional, was featured in pre-meet coverage in the Austin American Statesman.  But it was Dickinson's Leon Bookman on top at the end of a blazing sprint in US#1 20.67 +0.5.  Christian 20.78 and third place San Angelo Lake View sr Saidric Williams 20.91 made it three runners under 21 seconds.

  • 4A Boys PV: The pole vault pit is less than a pole's length from the backstretch stands, and Wolfforth Friendship jr Sage Thames had the crowd roaring with jump after jump without a miss -- all the way to US#1 17-6.5.  This broke his own Texas 4A record (16-7) by almost a foot.

  • 4A Girls LJ, TJ: Bay City sr Chandi Jones doubled in US#1 20-10.25 +2.9 and  US#5 40-9 +1.5

  • 4A Girls 400: Lancaster freshman Jerrika Chapple 52.65 - US#2.

  • 4A Boys 800: Keller sr Daniel Pessing took the lead early and held off a good field the rest of the way in US#6 1:51.85.

  • 4A Boys 400 Houston Forest Brook's Ivory McCain upset US#3 Pflugerville Connally sr Jonte Buhl in US#4 46.73 to 47.00.  Buhl drew lane 8 in Texas' random seeding and when McCain made up the stagger it was too late to recover.

  • 4A Girls Hurdles: Port Arthur jr Ranysha LeBlanc doubled in US#1 13.51 +1.9 and US#3 41.29

  • Girls Throws: Red Oak fr Michelle Carter, daughter of a famous Texas thrower, made a spectacular debut on the Texas State Meet stage with a double in US#5 48-5.25 and  144-0.  Michelle's dad Michael is the all-time US record holder in shot put (81-3.5) and also played football for the San Francisco 49ers.

  • Girls HJ: Unheralded Buda Hays soph Helen Breyfogle upset US#2 Natassia Vice at 5-8.  Vice needed three tries to make 5-8 and before the two went to 5-10 Vice was disqualified for using a 2-way radio to communicate with her coach between jumps.

The meet continues all day and evening Saturday.

T.C. Williams Invitational
Sheena Johnson, Rickey Harris light it up in Virginia

Dwight Thomas did not run, but he was not missed as Sheena Johnson, Rickey Harris, and a host of others provided enough heroics for two big meets.

Gar-Field VA sr Johnson won five events, including two that required same day prelims, and became the fifth fastest high school girl ever in the 300m hurdles with a blazing 40.74 time, more than 3 seconds ahead of the runner-up. That put Johnson #1 in the US on the DyeStat Elite rankings, ahead of the great Lashinda Demus, Long Beach Wilson CA jr who was the 1999 Girls Athlete of the Year. Demus in turn has two of the times ahead of Johnson on the all-time 300m list. This story is obviously not over, as Demus is openly shooting to beat the US record of 40.18 (Leslie Maxie, Millbrae CA, 1984).  The rest of Johnson's day went like this: 11.99, 14.16, 18-4, and 39-3.5.

Meanwhile, Rickey Harris was almost as outstanding on the boys side. The Centreville jr shook off the shoulder injury suffered a week ago in the Penn Relays and won three events by big margins: 200m (21.22), 400m (47.06, a margin of 0.78), and 110h (13.89, a margin of 0.52).

Three boys who chased Harris got their own wins in other events.  Oxon Hill MD sr David Driggers,  22.31 in the 200, won the 100 in 10.54.  Surratsville MD jr Jerod Void, 14.41 in the 110 hurdles, won the 300m hurdles in 38.63.  Northwestern MD sr Dwayne Thomas, 48.08 third in the 400, won the 800 in 1:52.92.

Dwayne's brother Dwight, US and Pan Am Junior sprint champion, was entered in both the 100 and 200, but did not run.  It would have been his first competition representing a high school in more than a year.

Heritage VA boys moved to US#5 in the 4x400 relay with a 3:14.93 victory.

The girls events saw a flock of other top performances.  Campbell County WY jr Alicia Craig, in town for a wedding, solidified her US#5 ranking in the 3200 meters with a 32-second victory in 10:40.30.  Jr Tysha Colon, of H.D. Woodson in Washington DC, had daylight over a stellar field in the 200 meters in 24.04 US#5.  (Alyssa Aiken 24.19, Teyarnte Carter 24.21, and Chiquita Stevens 24.48).  Stevens got her wins as the Largo MD girls doubled in the short relays: 46.35 US#6 and 3:58.30.  Hayfield VA sr Nikeya Green doubled easily in 2:15.94 and 5:08.54.  Hayfield also got a throws double as sr India Odum went 39-3.5 and 45-8.75.  Long Reach MD sr Cynthia Nicholls got 5-9 for one of the best girls HJ marks of the season.

  • NC Honor Roll by Gene Cherry - 10 deep lists for each event

  • OR - Centennial Invitational
This meet featured a great boys 3000 meter race. The top 16 in the field all finished under 9:00 min, with Ian Dobson and Noel Paulson within a second of each other. Dobson won in 8:18.16 and Paulson was 2nd in 8:18.72. (about 21 seconds ahead of the next finishers).

The weather was perfect, clear and cool. Dobson took the early lead at the front of a pretty tight pack. At around a mile he began to lengthen the lead slowly followed by Kyle Robinson and Chris Clancy.  With around 800m to go Paulson left the chase pack and began moving up, from about 20 or so meters behind Dobson.  Paulson was right on Dobson's heels over the last 300m with the two running stride-for-stride, but
it's pretty tough to run down somebody like Ian. The times for their final lap were 61 seconds for Dobson and 60 for Paulson.

These turned out to be the 3rd and 5th all-time fastest high school 3000m ever run in Oregon and a PR for both.. Paulson broke the Oregon 3A record by 6 seconds.

The Oregon State Meet may see more records fall as US#3 Eric Logsdon joins these US#1 Dobson and US#2 Paulson, although Paulson runs in a different class..
