Webb watch
- This week at Herbster? After
a false alarm last week at the Allen Johnson Invitational in Virginia, it
appears more definite that Alan Webb's next attempt to break the 4:00
barrier in the mile run will occur this Saturday at the Herbster Classic
at U. of North Carolina-Charlotte. Meet director Brad Herbster said
Webb's coach committed the South Lakes Reston VA junior to be in Charlotte
Saturday night.
The meet starts at 4 pm and the seeded Boys Mile will be
the concluding event at about 8:30 pm. Herbster announced these
entries: Alan Webb, Sean Jefferson, John Jefferson, Brian McGovern,
Bobby Lockhart, Stephen Haas, Joe Thorne, Cory Presnick, Derrick Wyatt,
Kevin Jones,
and Quinn Thomas. The 12th and final slot has Ricky
Brookshire's name on it if he decides to pass up his senior prom.
There will be other top attractions at the second running
of the Herbster meet, including James Doaty of Male Louisville KY
in the 800 and Leigh Smith of Leesville RD NC in the javelin.
Both are defending national champions in their events. Herbster

Meet managers announced that Webb would shoot for a 4:00 minute
mile in the Allen Johnson Invitational
at Lake Braddock High School 5/13, but he did not enter. His next
serious mile is expected to be the Nike Mile at the Herbster Classic in
North Carolina next Saturday May 20.
The meet at Lake Braddock is named after THE Allen Johnson, a graduate.
The Olympic champion hurdler graduated from Lake Braddock and headed a
fund raising campaign for a new track recently. He was a do
everything athlete at Lake Braddock, including 7 feet in the high jump
and 49 feet triple jump. Here is Conrad Haber's account of
the meet:
The conditions were hazy, hot, and humid - yet the Allen Johnson
Track was crammed with runners prepared to push themselves to the
limits.
The biggest star of the meet had to be Ricky Harris of Centerville
who was the lone double winner of the day. Ricky started off the
meet with a time of 13.71 in the high hurdles demolishing the entire
field. Not a bad start for Ricky, considering that his time in the
high hurdles set a meet record by 0.67 (Brandon Reyster
14.38).
The other victory for Ricky came in the 300 hurdles where he
cruised to a 38.08 victory.
Some of the other big performances at the Allen Johnson
Invitational resulted in meet records. Jeremey Harris of West
Potomac ran away from the field to finish roughly 2 seconds ahead of
his nearest competitor, finishing in a meet record time of
48.12. In the 4x100, the home team of Lake Braddock came
together to run a meet record time of 43.37.
One of the best races of the day was the 4x800. Lake Braddock, with
the help of their 1:56 leadoff leg, found the guts to outlast rival
West Springfield to capture the 4x800 in a time of
8:02.
The biggest story of the day, however, did not involve any running
at all. Alan Webb, who so many had come to see, decided not to
compete at the Invitational this weekend. "He is
training through this week", stated the South Lakes
coach. Alan will take his talents to North Carolina next week
as he attempts to become the 4th American to ever break the 4 minute
mile barrier as a high schooler.

DQ's are in vogue these
days but the one in the Davenport IA city championships is a bit
unusual: The girls 4x400 anchor runner for Davenport North was so
happy at being so far ahead in the stretch that she did a cartwheel with
50 meters to go. We guess the officials thought that was taunting,
or something.

Unofficial Texas Girls
Pole Vault Championship
The Texas UIL has turned down requests for girls pole vault as an
official event, so Southwest Texas State coach Don Hood organized the
Girls First Pole Vault Championship for Texas girls. Fifteen girls
competed, with Ally Daum of Houston winning at 11-6.5, followed
by Jessica Edwards 10-6 and Kacie Petropoulos 10-6. Daum is
coached by David Butler, who coached national boys champion Jim Autenreith
a couple of years ago and has led the campaign to get girls PV sanctioned
in Texas.

Another
Ale Moment Alejandra Barrientos goes 10:11.19 in 3200
meters to become US#1 in three events (800, mile, and 2-mile). Here
is Marty Kruger's account:
Alejandra Barrientos lapped the field at the Central Coast
Section Southern trials 3200. Barrientos looked smooth and under control as she cranked out consistent laps
of 78 after an opening 72....She really hit full stride with 800 to go when
she started lapping the main pack. Her last 800 was 2:25, a closing
68.9....5:09.7/5:01.5....She caught the second place runner Mitty's Rachel Peters (11:28.88) with 420 meters to go.
Less than 20 minutes later Ale anchored the Cougars to a 3:55.61 4 x 400
relay with a 57.2 clocking. She won her 1600 heat earlier in the day in 4:59.00. Sister Raquel won her
heat in a PR of 5:00.66.

- MN Central Lakes Conference
sees 13-0.5 and 12-7.5 girls PV! The St.
Cloud MN Times reports that two girls beat the current US#1 mark
in pole vault Tuesday 5/16 at the Central Lakes Conference
championship in Brainerd MN.
"Willmar sophomore Stacie Manuel qualified for the U.S.
Olympic Trials, which will be in July, with a first-place pole vault
of 13 feet,1/2 inch. Sartell's sr Michelle Legatt was second
with a 12-7 1/2."
Here is Minnesotan Kevin Hansen's rundown on the two girls:
"Michelle Legatt had cleared 11' 7" at Reno in the Summit, Stacie went 11'as a
frosh last year. This spring they have dualed the HS record up from 11'3" in MN, both taking the crown just to
lose it to the other the next week. Both may be in the mid 13's by June and our state meet.
Both had trained with my club Altitude with Attitude TC, in St. Cloud, MN
last summer and fall/winter. Both are currently coached by vaulters who
have worked with me and jumped for AATC or St. Cloud State University.
Jed Bergstrom (SCSU All-American and pr 16'3"- a red-shirt this year )

Jon Heath (AATC and former hs vaulter has gone +15 on a 13' pole:-)
