Eric
Logsdon: Rising to the Top
in the Land of Pre
Part 3 of a series by Stephen Underwood, a self-confessed track nut
from Georgia who has been inspired by the resurgence of prep distance
running in the year 2000. In the days leading up to the Foot
Locker Outdoor championships in Raleigh NC June 16-17, we will present
several insightful profiles of the boys and girls who are thrilling the
nation.

Webb Watch:
Virginia state meet managers (June 9-10) offered to start the
1600 at the mile mark and time both distances for a sub-4 minute try by
Alan Webb, but Webb declined. Webb will likely run the 800, 1600,
and 4x800, making it unlikely that Webb will run the mile at the
Foot Locker Outdoor championships in Raleigh June 16-17. Coach
Scott Raczko said the next target for a 4-minute mile by Webb will be
summer meets with older runners: the Prefontaine in OR or the Maine
Distance carnival. Webb was already reported leaning toward the
2-mile at Raleigh to get another crack at Dathan Ritzenhein, who bested
Webb (and everyone else) at the Foot Locker national cross country
finals in Orlando last December. (Ben Ackerly)
24th Golden South Classic
Erica Whipple beats Sanya Richards in 200, 23.81 to 24.20. Both skip 100 and leave it open for Richards' soph
team mate Talonda Ingram 11.84. Northeast Macon GA fr Stephanie Smith
won 400 in 54.29 and it wasn't even a PR; she posted a 53.65 in the Georgia 4A state meet.
Boyd Anderson jr Andrea Austin doubled in the 800 and Mile in 2:14.29 and 5:07.06.
Princeton bound pole vaulter Chelo Canino edged Lauren Tinsley on misses at 12-0, with three more girls
over 11 feet. Jr Latasha Pharr of North Rowan NC, home of the HS triple jump, soared 41-7 US#3 in that event.

in OR - 2nd to Pre
The Canby OR senior set a state meet record and closed out his HS career
secon1d only to Steve Prefontaine at this distance in Oregon
history.
It was a battle between future Oregon (Logsdon) and Stanford (Klamath
Union sr Ian Dobson) runners. Dobson led the field
through 1200 meters. But then Logsdon turned in a 63 second lap to
take a decisive lead which he improved to 12 seconds at the finish,
beating the old record by 11 seconds and just 2 seconds short of Steve
Prefontaine's OR record. Mark
Webber paints a word picture on Oregon Preps.

Nik Arrhenius 213-5 DT -

Association All-Comers Series Meet at Salt Lake City 6/7. It was
98 degrees, sunny, with a stiff wind coming across the right sector
line.
Nick Schneider
throws another hat into the crowded ring of HS distance runners.
At a MN sectional in Minneapolis, the Benilde-St. Margaret's junior ran
9:01.00 for 3200 and 4:08.35 for 1600, winning by 17 and 11
seconds. The MN State Meet is June 9-10.
WV school sues after
pole vault cancelled - Capital Charleston girls led
Parkersburg by 14.5 points in the AAA state meet, but Parkersburg had
the state record holder and another likely 3rd place for 16 points to
none in the girls pole vault -- enough for the state title. But the PV was cancelled because of heavy
rain and Capital was awarded the trophy. When the WVSSAC board of
appeals denied Parkersburg's request to run the pole vault on a later
day, Parkersburg filed for an injunction in local courts.
On Friday 6/2, the Wood County Circuit
Court ruled in favor of the Parkersburg pole vaulters. Judge
George Hill said "irreparable damage" would be done to the
athletes if the event was not completed. He ordered the event to
be run as soon as possible.
The WVSSAC appealed to the WV Supreme Court, which
agreed on 6/6 to consider the matter 6/13.
On 6/7, a strange "compromise" was
reached. The WVSSAC will drop its appeal and reschedule the girls
PV, but the event will not count for team standings. So the
original motive for Parkersburg's suit will not be satisfied.

VA Runner gives
coach a wedding present
Williamsburg Va soph Bryce Ruiz broke his own coach's meet
record in the Bay Rivers District 5/19 with a 9:25.74 for 3200
meters. Coach Howard Townsend was not at the meet because he was
getting married.
Bryce said: "I thought this was the best
wedding present I could give coach Townsend. It let him know we were all
wishing him the best. It was the most relaxed race I ever ran. I was
thinking about coach and that the nervousness I was feeling must be
nothing compared to poor coach Townsend's situation."
DQ's are in vogue
these days - a logo and a cartwheel
Item 1: In the Frederick
County MD championships, Middletown's Tyler Caudle ran the
fastest 400 meters in the 20 years of the meet, but she was DQ'd because
of a faded Nike logo on spandex shorts worn under her uniform
shorts. A
parent and coach responded.
Item 2: In the Davenport IA city championships the girls 4x400 anchor runner for Davenport North was so
happy at being so far ahead in the stretch that she did a cartwheel with
50 meters to go. We guess the officials thought that was taunting,
or something.
