WV school sues after
pole vault cancelled - Capital Charleston girls led
Parkersburg by 14.5 points in the AAA state meet, but Parkersburg had
the state record holder and another likely 3rd place for 16 points to
none in the girls pole vault -- enough for the state title. But the PV was cancelled because of heavy
rain and Capital was awarded the trophy. When the WVSSAC board of
appeals denied Parkersburg's request to run the pole vault on a later
day, Parkersburg filed for an injunction in local courts.
On Friday 6/2, the Wood County Circuit
Court ruled in favor of the Parkersburg pole vaulters. Judge
George Hill said "irreparable damage" would be done to the
athletes if the event was not completed. He ordered the event to
be run as soon as possible.
The WVSSAC appealed to the WV Supreme Court, which
agreed on 6/6 to consider the matter 6/13.
On 6/7, a strange "compromise" was
reached. The WVSSAC will drop its appeal and reschedule the girls
PV, but the event will not count for team standings. So the
original motive for Parkersburg's suit will not be satisfied.
