About the AAU
Amateur Athletic Union
Founded in 1888, the Amateur Athletic Union is a non-profit organization that conducts competition in many sports as well as track and field and cross country. Prior to passage of the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU was primarily involved in preparing athletes for the Olympic games. Since 1978, the AAU has provided programs for participants of all ages under the motto, "Sports for All, Forever," with 500,000 participants and 50,000 volunteers currently active.
The AAU is divided into 57 associations; together they sanction 10,000 local events and 250 national championships in 34 sports.
