Latest News

DyeStat XC Leader Lists - The California State Meet and the 11/25 Foot Locker regionals added more than 400 times to the lists - making it 2,274 times from 355 meets.
Boys 5k
-
With his 14:35 win in the Foot Locker Midwest regional, Michigan superstar Dathan Ritzenhein, defending national Foot Locker champion, now has the top 4 times and 6 of the top 8.  His Virginia rival, Alan Webb, has the other two top 8 times.
Boys 3 Mile - Alan Webb's 13:57 for a short, but hilly Virginia course is still Number One.
Girls 5k - The California State Meet produced a new 1-2:  Hoover Glendale CA sr Anita Siraki 16:59 and 2-time Foot Locker finalist Sara Bei 17:13.  Siraki now leads both girls lists and she has the only sub-17:00 5k time this season.
Girls 3 Mile - Siraki holds the top 3 times in this list.  Only two other girls have run sub-17:00 -- Julie Allen CA and Christa Benton FL.

Ryan Hall 14:50 in CA State Meet - Misses state meet record at Fresno 11/25 and, according to DyeStat Message Board poster Lasse Viren,  he hasn't decided about running in the Foot Locker West regional 12/2 at Mt. SAC.  Viren's post:
"Hall's splits 4:40 9:36 about a (4:40 last mile) finished with about a 40 sec win. it was cold and no sun out (after a mile my arms were ice COLD).  He said he wanted to run 4:35 9:20 and under 14:40 (course record is 14:38, he hinted he was thinking about getting it).  Hall seamed a little disappointed, said he will decide in the next few days if he will run footlocker."

Later, John Ortega reported in the Los Angeles Times that "Hall is leaning toward running in the meet after saying he wouldn't two weeks ago."

Top Performers of the 3 Foot Locker regionals 11/25

Dathan Ritzenhein MI - The defending national champion continued his season-long pattern of running 20-30 seconds faster than last year - a scary thought indeed for the opposition in Orlando.  Ritz won the Midwest Regional in a time of 14:35, beating his own course record at University of Wisconsin, Parkside by 20 seconds.  Before Ritz last year, no high schooler  had broken 15 minutes on this course.  Ritz set all the splits in 4:37, 9:16, and 14:00 for the mile markers.

Alan Webb VA - In a downpour at Charlotte on a McAlpine course already soaked, Webb took 9 seconds off his course record from 1999, winning the South regional in 14:43.

Penny Splichal ND - The Arkansas-bound star won the girls Midwest regional almost as easily as Ritzenhein won the boys.  Her winning time of 17:22 beat Victoria Jackson's 1999 time by 17 seconds, and Jackson went on last year to place second at Orlando.  Runner-up was  Maria Cicero IL in 17:38.

Christa Benton FL - After blistering the flat Florida courses all season long, Benton had no trouble with soggy McAlpine, winning the South regional in  17:56

Natasha Roetter MA - The Bay State junior backed up her fast Massachusetts times by winning decisively in 17:58.

Another recount in Florida! -- After celebrating their upset of Delray Atlantic for 3 days, joy turned to sorrow for Winter Park FL. The FHSA reversed the boys 4A result and declared Atlantic the winner, 111-115, when it was discovered by video reruns that Atlantic's 3rd runner finished 24th instead of 31st. What will the Florida Supreme Court say?

FL State Meet - Video rerun reverses boys 4A championship!! Original Result: Winter Park sr Mike Swope tops the Jefferson twins to lead his team to the 4A championship, 114-117, over Atlantic. Swope won in 14:54 3mi at Brevard Community College, with Atlantic's John and Sean Jefferson next at 15:03 and 15:09. Revised Result (after study of videos of the finish): Atlantic 111, Winter Park 115. Fastest girl is sr Christa Benton, Keswick Christian 17:26. Complete Florida State Meet Results

Mike Heiner - a Virginia hero - shows it's not all about winning. The fifth runner in the Centreville VA family came across a fallen runner 100 yards from the finish in the Virginia State Meet. Giving up his own chances, Mike stopped and picked up the runner and carried him to the finish line, losing 100 positions, but winning the cheers of everyone present and eternal gratitude from the fallen runner, who has a heart ailment. Maryland Coach Dies Young

Saratoga sweeps NY Federation - Saratoga's boys joined their heavily favored US#1t girls team to make it a sweep for the Saratoga Springs school, first time in this meet that the same school won both races. The girls' winning score of 31 points was a new meet record. Individual titles went to other schools. St. Anthony's sr Charles Millieon set a new meet record of 15:40. White Plains sr Nicole Boykin 18:22 was the girls winner, six seconds ahead of Fayetteville-Manlius jr Laurel Burdick. Complete Results

NJ All Group Meet of Champions - Christian Brothers Academy edges Cherokee boys, 61-69. Just as in Cherokee's earlier win over CBA, the tussle went down to the fifth runner. Eastern sr Mike Myers was the individual winner in 15:50. In the girls race, Hunterdon Central 95 won the team title and Haddonfield Mem sr Erin Donohue 18:28 was a 46-second winner. MA MIAA State Meet - Massachusetts boys and girls battered the course record all day at Tufts University's "The Farm" course. Lexington jr Natasha Roetter 18:08 took 50 seconds off the girls record. Mohawk Trail sr Neal Graves 15:41.5 beat the old boys record by 22 seconds and Austin Prep sr Matt Pimentel by 4 seconds, in leading Mohawk Trail 58 to the Division 2 title. St. John's Prep-Danvers 44 unseated Gloucester in Division 1. In all, nine runners beat the old course records. Complete Results

CA: Ryan Hall breaks Jeff Nelson's Mt. SAC record - In the California Southern Section finals at Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut CA, Big Bear CA sr Ryan Hall ran 14:28, four seconds better than the legendary Jeff Nelson's record (1978) for the hilly, difficult 2.98 mile course. After flirting with the record last week in the SS prelims (14:35), Hall got it today 11/18.

Glendale Hoover sr Anita Siraki won Div 1 girls race in 16:53.

DyeStat message board poster Lasse Viren reported:

Hall's split were 4:29 and 9:45. Ryan did run alone most of the way, but the first mile his lead was 14 seconds to a pair of guys. At the top of the switchbacks it was only 10 seconds (one guy really pushed the hill). but at the 1.5 mark he had clearly hit the pedal and took off (lead was about 26-28 sec at 1.5) once he hit the road off the dirt he really looked like he was sprinting with the windmill turnover.

I asked Hall about all those little questions people have been pondering.

ME: what colleges are you going to ?
Hall: I narrowed it down to Stanford, UCLA, and Cal Baptist

ME: Are you going to footlocker?
Hall : If I run good at state I will do the regionals

In further interviews, Hall had this to say:

When asked the difference between last week's 14:35 and this 14:28 effort was that after the mile mark this time, he stated, "I relaxed during the switchback loop and after the mile, while last week I felt I tightened up. I was aware of where I was in the race compared to the record, especially after two miles." When asked about Foot Locker in a couple of weeks, Ryan stated, "If things go well at state and things keep progressing I think I will run it." After the 14:35 last week, "I respected that record, but once I passed two miles I was pretty sure that I was going to get it." When asked how he will approach the state meet and Foot Locker, he replied, "Next week will kind of be an indicator. I will run hard. If I run well at state I will run Regionals, and if I do not run well I will probably pack it up and wait for track season."

DyeStat says: Fans everywhere fervently hope that Hall does well at California states next week, so he will enter the Foot Locker West regional and advance to a dream matchup in Orlando between Hall, Dathan Ritzenhein of Michigan, and Alan Webb of Virginia.
