Mountain States Dominate at Mt SAC

Flathead HS, Kalispell MT, placed 1-3-19, making a case for moving up from their US#6 ranking in The HarrierFrom left: Kurt Michels, Seth Watkins, Coach Paul Jorgensen, and David Vidal.

Alicia Craig over Anita Siraki; Ryan Hall 4th behind Watkins, Goodwin, and Vidal
BOYS: Heavily favored Big Bear CA sr Ryan Hall faltered with 200 meters to go and was passed by Kalispell MT sr Seth Watkins, Mountain View UT sr Chandler Goodwin, and Kalispell MT sr David Vidal.   The races were delayed by a sewer line break that caused a small fetid lake near the starting line, and it was very warm by the time of the boys race.   California Div 1 champion J.J. Duke was among the top 5 until the very end, but started lurching in the last 100 meters and was passed by Gotcher for the last qualifying spot.  Duke said the heat bothered him.   It was a bunched lead pack most of the race after a torrid first mile in 4:36, but Hall seemed in command on Reservoir Hill with a half mile to go.  But as they hit the air strip before the finish, Hall appeared out of sync as he was passed.  Paul Jorgensen of Kalispell MT, was a proud coach as his Flathead HS team placed 1st, 3rd, and 19th.

GIRLS:  Campbell County WY sr Alicia Craig beat Hoover Glendale CA sr Anita Siraki in a battle of unbeaten national stars.  Craig pulled away midway and won by 15 seconds.  Montgomery CA sr Sara Bei completed the trio of heavy favorites 5 seconds later in third.   Notables not qualifying: Gallup NM jr Felicia Guliford, a two-time top 5 finisher in the national finals, finished far back in 72nd after stumbling at the middle of the race on Poop Out Hill.   WA sr Jodee Adams-Moore was among the leaders throughout the race, but also stumbled in the last 300 meters and ended the race on all fours as dozens of runners passed her.  San Lorenzo Valley CA sr Alejandra Barrientos, a national finalist last year, did not run; Coach Rob Collins said she will take a break from competition to build up her conditioning gradually for outdoor season.  Barrientos led the nation in the 800, 1600, and 3200 before she went down with a stress fracture last June.

DyeStat XC Leader Lists - The California State Meet and the 11/25 Foot Locker regionals added more than 400 times to the lists - making it 2,274 times from 355 meets.
Boys 5k
-
With his 14:35 win in the Foot Locker Midwest regional, Michigan superstar Dathan Ritzenhein, defending national Foot Locker champion, now has the top 4 times and 6 of the top 8.  His Virginia rival, Alan Webb, has the other two top 8 times.
Boys 3 Mile - Alan Webb's 13:57 for a short, but hilly Virginia course is still Number One.
Girls 5k - The California State Meet produced a new 1-2:  Hoover Glendale CA sr Anita Siraki 16:59 and 2-time Foot Locker finalist Sara Bei 17:13.  Siraki now leads both girls lists and she has the only sub-17:00 5k time this season.
Girls 3 Mile - Siraki holds the top 3 times in this list.  Only two other girls have run sub-17:00 -- Julie Allen CA and Christa Benton FL.

Ryan Hall 14:50 in CA State Meet - Misses state meet record at Fresno 11/25 and, according to DyeStat Message Board poster Lasse Viren,  he hasn't decided about running in the Foot Locker West regional 12/2 at Mt. SAC.  Viren's post:
"Hall's splits 4:40 9:36 about a (4:40 last mile) finished with about a 40 sec win. it was cold and no sun out (after a mile my arms were ice COLD).  He said he wanted to run 4:35 9:20 and under 14:40 (course record is 14:38, he hinted he was thinking about getting it).  Hall seamed a little disappointed, said he will decide in the next few days if he will run footlocker."

Later, John Ortega reported in the Los Angeles Times that "Hall is leaning toward running in the meet after saying he wouldn't two weeks ago."

Top Performers of the 3 Foot Locker regionals 11/25

Dathan Ritzenhein MI - The defending national champion continued his season-long pattern of running 20-30 seconds faster than last year - a scary thought indeed for the opposition in Orlando.  Ritz won the Midwest Regional in a time of 14:35, beating his own course record at University of Wisconsin, Parkside by 20 seconds.  Before Ritz last year, no high schooler  had broken 15 minutes on this course.  Ritz set all the splits in 4:37, 9:16, and 14:00 for the mile markers.

Alan Webb VA - In a downpour at Charlotte on a McAlpine course already soaked, Webb took 9 seconds off his course record from 1999, winning the South regional in 14:43.

Penny Splichal ND - The Arkansas-bound star won the girls Midwest regional almost as easily as Ritzenhein won the boys.  Her winning time of 17:22 beat Victoria Jackson's 1999 time by 17 seconds, and Jackson went on last year to place second at Orlando.  Runner-up was  Maria Cicero IL in 17:38.

Christa Benton FL - After blistering the flat Florida courses all season long, Benton had no trouble with soggy McAlpine, winning the South regional in  17:56

Natasha Roetter MA - The Bay State junior backed up her fast Massachusetts times by winning decisively in 17:58.

South Carolina's big haul: College Choices 2001 - The University of South Carolina may be cornering the market on female sprinters in the Class of 2001.   Coach Curtis Frye has signed enough top sprinters to make a championship relay team as freshmen next year:

Erica Whipple FL
Alexis Joyce CO
Lashinda Demus CA
Khalilah Carpenter OH
Shevon Stoddart NY
Tiffany Ross FL

The big one is still out there - Monique Henderson - and she is also rumored to be leaning toward "USC" - the only question is which one? The California or the South Carolina verson?

Another recount in Florida! -- After celebrating their upset of Delray Atlantic for 3 days, joy turned to sorrow for Winter Park FL. The FHSA reversed the boys 4A result and declared Atlantic the winner, 111-115, when it was discovered by video reruns that Atlantic's 3rd runner finished 24th instead of 31st. What will the Florida Supreme Court say?

FL State Meet - Video rerun reverses boys 4A championship!! Original Result: Winter Park sr Mike Swope tops the Jefferson twins to lead his team to the 4A championship, 114-117, over Atlantic. Swope won in 14:54 3mi at Brevard Community College, with Atlantic's John and Sean Jefferson next at 15:03 and 15:09. Revised Result (after study of videos of the finish): Atlantic 111, Winter Park 115. Fastest girl is sr Christa Benton, Keswick Christian 17:26. Complete Florida State Meet Results
