Gourley's List - Steve Silva, Laura Gerraughty top early season weight throw rankings.  Gourley's List 12/17

DyeStat Elite 2001 Indoor First rankings of the season - Most athletes are just getting warmed up, but we have 229 performances from 25 meets that beat the 2001 indoor cutoffs for the unique DyeStat Elite top 100 national rankings.

We already have a 7 foot boy high jumper (Dan Olson NY), a 40 foot girl triple jumper (Shenae Dawkins NY), a 50 foot girl shot putter (Laura Gerraughty NH), a 15-foot boy pole vaulter (Jeff Martzall IN), and an aptly named boy horizontal jumper, I. Perfection Harris NY (leading the US at 22-8 and 45-9).

The greatest performance of the young season is New Yorker Stacey Livingston's 1:30.98 for 600 meters, the second best US prep all time.  Livingston also runs on Boys and Girls High's US#1 gils 4x400 team at 3:53.58.  Others flirting with 2000 season best levels are Jeff Robbins' Air Time vaulting teammates Molly Lederman and Samantha Shepard of MA, tied at 12-7.5; Erin Donohue NJ 4:58.74 mile;  Shane Stroup MD 4:01.53 1500m; and Vikas Gowda MD 58-6.5 SP.

ATTENTION meet directors: Be sure to send meet results to dye@dyestat.com to assure your meet gets publicity and the athletes get the recognition they deserve.   If the meet is scored in HyTek, send the backup file HYBACKUP.ZIP.

ATTENTION coaches, athletes, and media.   Send qualifying  individual performances for meets not already on DyeStat on the form, How to Get Ranked.

1:30.98 is #2 all-time US 600 meters  by Stacey Livingston of Boys and Girls HS at the 47th Bishop Loughlin Games.  Meet records fall all day at the super swift New York Armory oval. (It was already fast last year and they have a NEW surface this year!)  Boys MVP is Travis Yancy of Roman Catholic for his 1:19.87 600 meters MR.   Bishop Loughlin Games results.

VA FIT Relays - Lake Braddock VA wins 5 of 8 relays at George Mason - 25 action photos and complete results.

Farewell Cross Country,
hello Indoor

The Foot Locker finals ended the prep cross country season.  Now, without missing a beat, DyeStat and high school athletes switch to indoor track.   DyeStat covered 2  meets on-site last weekend:  Pangaea Invitational at the new Prince Georges County  MD facility and the 6th FIT Relays at George Mason U., Fairfax VA on Saturday.  The FIT Relays attracted 50 schools from VA, DC, MD, and DE.  We also had electronic coverage from the New York Armory, which will host 85 indoor meets this season, of the big Bishop Loughlin Games.
First indoor 2001 DyeStat Elite rankings are coming this week.

Final 2000 XC Leader List :

Final lists of 2,387 performances from 360 meets are headed by the truly elite prep cross country runners.  Sara Bei's Foot Locker win was the fastest girls 5k time of the year.  Two-time Foot Locker champ Dathan Ritzenhein ended with the five fastest boys 5k times.  Three-mile leaders were the Foot Locker runner-ups: Alan Webb and Anita Siraki.

Boys 5k (1st: Dathan Ritzenhein MI 14:11 - 1,035 marks 16:05 or better) - The list reflects the 1-2-3 finish of the Foot Locker finals by the Big 3 runners of the year.  Michigan superstar Dathan Ritzenhein turned in his 8th sub-15:00 performance in winning his second straight Foot Locker championship.  This gave him the fastest 5 times of the season and 7 of the top 9.  Foot Locker runnerup Alan Webb of VA, had the other two top-9 times and 4 sub-15:00 marks for the season.  Ryan Hall of CA,  had two sub-15:00 performances, including his third place finish at Orlando.
Girls 5k (1st: Sara Bei CA 16:56 - 691 marks 19:05 or better) - Hoover Glendale CA sr Anita Siraki and Montgomery Santa Rosa CA sr Sara Bei moved to the top of this list in the California State Meet, with Siraki's 16:59 the only sub-17:00 mark in the nation at that time.  In the Foot Locker Finals at Orlando, the same two came down the stretch side by side to add two more sub-17:00 times to the list.  Bei prevailed this time in 16:56, one second ahead of Siraki, winning both the Foot Locker championship and the Leader List #1 for the season.
Boys 3 Mile (1st: Alan Webb VA 13:57 - 396 marks 15:35 or better) - Alan Webb's 13:57 for a short, but hilly Virginia course retains Number One.
Girls 3 Mile (1st: Anita Siraki CA 16:38 - 265 marks 18:35 or better) - Siraki turned in the top 3 times in this list.  Only two other girls ran sub-17:00 -- Julie Allen CA and Christa Benton FL.

Maryland Gets Great
New Indoor Facility

Maryland athletes have moved from the dark ages (the old Baltimore Armory) to the 21st century with the opening of the beautiful new Prince Georges County Sports and Learning Complex, Landover MD.  The complex is next to FedEx Stadium, home of the Washington Redskins, and came from negotiations between the late Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke and PG County officials for local infrastructure.  It is called a complex because the track and soccer arena is only half of the building -- there is also a championship swimming facility, family swimming center, fitness center, gymnastics competition facility, and mat sports facility.   The PG Sports Complex (how can we possibly use the complete title all the time?) will host the Maryland State Meet and the Nike Indoor Classic this season among many other events.  Thursday night there was Maryland's major season kickoff event, the Pangaea Invitational, and appreciative athletes turned in some great early season performances.   Pangaea Invitational results and pictures of the PG County Sports Complex.

The Harrier
Final 2000 Cross Country National Rankings
Boys:
Mountain View UT
Girls
Rockford MI, Saratoga NY (tie)
The final rankings confirm the Number One status that took shape in September after the Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte, the biggest confrontation of nationally ranked teams in the history of prep cross country.  The Mountain View UT boys won at Charlotte and remained undefeated the rest of the way through the Utah state meet.  The Saratoga NY girls won at Charlotte as well as the Manhattan Invitational 2 weeks later, conquering a bunch of nationally ranked teams in the process.  They pummeled strong New York state competition the remainder of the year with the deepest squad in anyone's memory.  Rockford MI girls started the season Number One and did nothing to tarnish that image in an undefeated season.  Because of Michigan state association rules, however, Rockford could not travel to Charlotte or other meets where they would have faced highly ranked teams.  Thus, like many times in college football before the BCS scheme, we have co-champions on the girls side.

The Final Rankings were little changed from the November 19 list, except for two significant moveups --  Peninsula CA girls off their strong California State Meet and the Flathead Kalispell MT boys after their remarkable 1-3-19 showing in the Foot Locker West regional.

Rockford MI and Mountain View UT were noteworthy for having both their boys and girls teams in the top 10.

Molly Lederman 13' 0.5"

Molly Lederman
, a junior at New Jewish HS, Waltham MA, pole vaulted 13' 0.5" 12/20/00 for a new US high school girls indoor record.  The old record of 13' 0.25" was set by Samantha Shepard at last year's USATF indoor championships.  Both girls train with Jeff Robbins' prolific Air Time club in Massachusetts.   The new record was set in a USATF development meet at Brown University.  Molly returns there Dec. 29 for the Brown Invitational.

South Carolina's recruiting coupDemus - Carpenter - Joyce - Whipple - Ross - Stoddart.
The University of South Carolina may be cornering the market on female sprinters in the Class of 2001.   Coach Curtis Frye has signed enough top sprinters to make a championship relay team as freshmen next year:

Erica Whipple FL
Alexis Joyce CO
Lashinda Demus CA
Khalilah Carpenter OH
Shevon Stoddart NY
Tiffany Ross FL

The big one is still out there - Monique Henderson - and she is also rumored to be leaning toward "USC" - the only question is which one? The California or the South Carolina verson?

South Carolina claims No. 1 2001 women's recruiting class - also sign Thomas Lewis, Ricardo Moody

BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

Winner: Dathan Ritzenhein
Repeat champion. Continues 2-year undefeated string in HS cross country and track.  Heat and a slow first mile (4:47) block record, but still second fastest Foot Locker final ever.

GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

Winner: Sara Bei
Completing her comeback from a disappointing 10th place regional finish a year ago.  Third trip to the finals is a charm with a thrilling stretch win over Anita Siraki.  Several girls complained of heat, including Alicia Craig, who fell out of contention in the third mile.
