Kate Johnston, Laura Gerraughty battle for US#1
in weight throw
- John-Paul Smolenski leads boys.  Gourley's Weight Throw List 1/14
Here is Kevin Gray's report in the Manchester Union Leader of the Johnston-Gerraughty duel at the Dartmouth Relays, courtesy of Lance Turley:

HANOVER 1/14/01 - Records may fall and some athletes will be long forgotten, but few at the 32nd annual Dartmouth Relays will ever forget the classic battle between Nashua's Laura Gerraughty and rival Kate Johnston of Warwick, R.I., yesterday.

Inside the busy Leverone Fieldhouse, all attention shifted to the girls' weight throw event, when these outstanding performers grasped the 20-pound weight. In a combined 12 throws during the morning session, Gerraughty and Johnston combined to break the meet record seven times - each time one-upping their rival.

Eventually Johnston claimed the top honor, nipping Gerraughty, and smashing the meet record by more than five feet. The University of North Carolina-bound Gerraughty, a senior at Nashua, finished runner-up after recording a personal best of 54 feet, 8¼ inches. Johnston and Gerraughty are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the country, respectively.

The Harrier
Final 2000 Cross Country National Rankings
Boys:
Mountain View UT
Girls
Rockford MI, Saratoga NY (tie)
The final rankings confirm the Number One status that took shape in September after the Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte, the biggest confrontation of nationally ranked teams in the history of prep cross country.  The Mountain View UT boys won at Charlotte and remained undefeated the rest of the way through the Utah state meet.  The Saratoga NY girls won at Charlotte as well as the Manhattan Invitational 2 weeks later, conquering a bunch of nationally ranked teams in the process.  They pummeled strong New York state competition the remainder of the year with the deepest squad in anyone's memory.  Rockford MI girls started the season Number One and did nothing to tarnish that image in an undefeated season.  Because of Michigan state association rules, however, Rockford could not travel to Charlotte or other meets where they would have faced highly ranked teams.  Thus, like many times in college football before the BCS scheme, we have co-champions on the girls side.

The Final Rankings were little changed from the November 19 list, except for two significant moveups --  Peninsula CA girls off their strong California State Meet and the Flathead Kalispell MT boys after their remarkable 1-3-19 showing in the Foot Locker West regional.

Rockford MI and Mountain View UT were noteworthy for having both their boys and girls teams in the top 10.
