the human side of the big meet as seen by Donna Dye

  • United Stars vs. Teekay Track Club - The superstar girls of United Stars (Pennsylvania) and Teekay Track Club (Wilson Long Beach CA - coached by "TK" Terry Kennedy) had terrific battles all through the meet, climaxing with the relays late Saturday.  The result was the same both times:  Teekay had the lead after Lashinda Demus ran the second leg , but United Stars rode to victory on the anchor legs of the coach's daughter, Tiffany Abney.
  • Donna on the Side at Simplot - the human side of the big meet by Donna Dye.
  • Lashinda Demus' record 53.38 - Wilson Long Beach CA star routs four United Stars in girls 400 meters.

  • James Hatch CO wins decisively in 1:53.16 boys 800 meters
  • Lisa Gibbs is 17-second winner in girls 3200 meters.
  • New season, same winning form - Sr Chandler Goodwin, ace of Mountain View UT's national champion cross country team, was a patient winner in the boys 3200 meters, waiting until the last 200 meters to make his winning move.
  • Two races in one in boys 400 meters - In all-Colorado duel, Gerren Crochet wins first half and Travis Anderson the second.

Alan Webb top seeded in 1600 and 1000m.

Seeds & performance lists

Ritz chooses Ireland
over Maryland

A spokesman for the Nike Indoor Classic announced that Dathan Ritzenhein has withdrawn from the meet to concentrate on training for the World Cross Country Championships in Ireland March 24-25.  The Rockford MI senior qualified for the US junior men's team at the US Winter XC Nationals Feb 17, but suffered his first cross country loss in 2 years (to U. Wisconsin freshman Matt Tegenkamp by 2 seconds).

Ritzenhein and his coach decided that training for both indoor track and cross country might undermine his chances in Ireland.

The NIC spokesman also said that sub-4 miler Alan Webb would run the 2 mile race at NIC instead of the mile.  Webb will also run on his South Lakes Reston VA distance medley team.   NIC will be held March 10-11 at the Prince George's County Sportsplex, Landover MD.

Roth's RaceWalk
Race walkers have often chided DyeStat for ignoring them in the DyeStat Elite rankings.  We challenged them to do for race walk what Bob Gourley has done for hammer and weight throwing.  Michael Roth accepted the challenge and is compiling national high school race walk rankings.  DyeStat will publish weekly Roth's weekly race walk rankings.  Check out Roth's RaceWalk now.
