Weightorama - A day after winning the New England Championship shot put with a record 53-2.75, Laura Gerraughty NH won the Weightorama 2001 at Providence RI with a throw of 56-9.5 to take the US#1 spot in Bob Gourley's 3/5 weight throw list for the 2001 indoor season. Kristen Michalski RI 56-1.25 also moved ahead of former US leader Kate Johnston. The boys competition also produced a new US#1 as John-Paul Smolenski NY threw 73-11.5 to move ahead of former US leader Nik Arrhenius UT. PA State Meet Alan Webb gets 1000 meter record - 2:23.68 - winning by nearly 10 seconds. Running in the Virginia AAA State Meet, Webb moved up from 3rd all time on the 1000 meter indoor list (2:24.13 at Virginia Tech last month) to #1. The South Lakes Reston VA senior, who set the indoor mile record with his sub-4 run in New York, broke the indoor 1000 meter mark set in 1987 by George Kersh, Pearl MS, 2:23.86. Webb's 1000 meter record came about an hour after he set a Virginia state record of 4:12.11 in the 1600 meters. Although a strong field was supposed to set up Webb for a record try in the 1000, he ran off from the beginning and when he finished there was a gap of nearly 10 seconds to the rest of the state's best. Splits by Pearl Watts: 27.5 seconds for the first 200 meters; 57 seconds at 400 meters; 1:11 at the 500 meter halfway mark; 1:25.5 for 600 meters and 1:55.15 (F.A.T.) at 800 meters. Topping off his day, Webb ran a 50.6 split in the
4x400 relay to help his South Lakes team to a second place finish behind
boys team champion Lake Braddock. Arkansas

Short Takes Sara Bei picks Stanford -- The Montgomery Santa Rosa CA star announced this week that she has made a verbal commitment to the Palo Alto power, joining fellow senior Alicia Craig, Campbell County WY. Another of this year's senior distance stars, Anita Siraki, Glendale CA, is also said to be considering Stanford.
Long Beach Wilson CA's stellar girls team has withdrawn from the Nike Indoor Classic and will instead run in New York at the New Balance National Scholastic Indoor Championship, according to a NIC press release.
Alicia Craig, Campbell Co WY sr, ran a 4:54.0 1600 meters at the Spearfish Indoor Invitational in Spearfish, SD Saturday 3/3 on an unbanked 200m Mondo surface at Black Hills State University at about 3500ft. elevation. With a 1.6 second handheld adjustment to 4:55.6 for a mile, that places Craig #2 on the DyeStat Elite national rankings. Karen Freberg of California threw the shot 53' in an outdoor meet recently, joining indoor record holder Laura Gerraughty of New Hampshire (53-11) in that rarified zone (before this year, only 8 girls had ever thrown 53', six indoor and two outdoor). A showdown at the national indoor championships this week would be epic. But it won't happen -- Freberg is going to NSIC in New York and Gerraughty is going to NIC in Maryland. Another casualty of the split national indoor championship scene. Good
news and bad news from the Illinois High School Association:

Week's Headlines
Ritz chooses Ireland A spokesman for the Nike Indoor Classic announced that Dathan Ritzenhein has withdrawn from the meet to concentrate on training for the World Cross Country Championships in Ireland March 24-25. The Rockford MI senior qualified for the US junior men's team at the US Winter XC Nationals Feb 17, but suffered his first cross country loss in 2 years (to U. Wisconsin freshman Matt Tegenkamp by 2 seconds). Ritzenhein and his coach decided that training for both indoor track and cross country might undermine his chances in Ireland. The NIC spokesman also said that sub-4 miler Alan Webb would run the 2 mile race at NIC instead of the mile. Webb will also run on his South Lakes Reston VA distance medley team. NIC will be held March 10-11 at the Prince George's County Sportsplex, Landover MD. Natasha Hastings beats a Marion Jones record! - the precocious freshman from New York City ran 200 meters in 24.38 at the MAC Youth Invitational Sunday 2/25 at the NY Armory, setting a new US record for a freshman girl. The old record holder? Marion Jones 24.40! Hastings had to run down her A.P. Randolph NY teammate Desiree Moorer, who hung on for second in 24.66. They were the US#2 and #7 fastest 200 meters run this season. Before her record setting 200, Hastings won the 55 in 7.12 US#9 in her only try at that distance this year. OH Clinton Massie VA Central
