1.  Amber Trotter CA

Amber says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had won and were going back to Orlando? Was this what you were shooting for all year?

Yes, I was hoping to make it back to Florida this season, although I've had lots of other reasons for competing, too. :) It wasn't a close race, so I was pretty confident I was going to make it after a mile or so... I was VERY happy about going to Orlando after the race, but I was bummed that some girls didn't make it... (Liza Pascuito).

2. Was Foot Locker Regional the best race of your year? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

I think my best race of the year was the Mt. SAC invite. I felt so strong and fluid and setting the course record was awesome. I love that course; it made Regionals especially fun.

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

I have two main coaches: Jerry Drew and Dan Jurado. They are both absolutely amazing, totally dedicated and have been with me all four years. I owe them everything. Jerry runs with us and is passionate, spontaneous and slightly crazy :)! Dan is the stat man, he reads up on stuff and plans out the season way in advance and documents everything. They balance each other out beautifully! We did more mileage this year than we did last year(60-65 miles per week vs. 45-55), more drills and plyometrics and I ate ALOT more, too! I especially like our fartlek workouts: 4-6 miles of 300/500 - it ends up being somewhere just under 6-minute pace for the whole workout.

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to become the champion?

My goals on Saturday are to have fun and enjoy my last high school CC race, to finish higher than seventh (where I placed last year), and to run to the maximum, pushing my limits to their full extent. Anything can happen out there and there are many athletes who could become the champion under many different circumstances. We'll see!

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

My coaches and teammates are my most important running influences. I love and admire them and they have supported me through the season and the years. My buddies Casey, Chase, Yoshaany, Steven and Marcos have been with me all four years... My friend Shelby is a sophomore this year and we've become really close. She ran the seeded race at Regionals with me. I've always really admired Anita Siraki. Jerry is also one of my favorite runners, and was quite the athlete in his day.

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

My biggest interests outside running are spending time with my family, gardening, environmental science, backpacking, music, Spanish and cooking. (and more!)

2. Felicia Guliford NM

Felicia says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you gotten 2nd and were going back to Orlando after missing last year? Was it a surprise, or something you were shooting for all year?

I felt great and yes, it was something that I had been working towards all year.

2. Was Foot Locker Regional your best race of the year? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

Yes, it was, because I felt really strong and relaxed. I don't really have strong competition here in NM, and so racing with competition is quite different and exciting, for that matter

3. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

All of my coaches have been very supportive and encouraging. My training coach for regionals has actually been my father who is the assistant coach for our x-country team at school. My head coach Curtis Williams would give my father the workouts and my father would make sure that we did them. He made the practices fun and enjoyable, even the very tough workouts seemed to be made quite easier with his coaching.

4. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to get top 7 or better?

My goals are just to have as much fun as I possibly can. I know that it will take a lot of hard work to get into the top 7, but I know with a little confidence and a lot of heart anything is possible.

5. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

God has been good to me and I know in my heart that all that has happened to me, good and bad, have been blessings from Him. My parents also play huge roles in my success. They have been there through all the ups and downs with encouraging words and tons of hugs and kisses. I couldn't be where I am without my coaches. They have given me the confidence in my training and in them that I need to overcome anything that comes in my way. They have also kept me interested when times got hard. My friends help in balancing my life and in making cross country fun! My closest friends are those that I have made in cross country and track. I couldn't be where I am today without them.

6. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

I love children. I want to be a pediatrician some day and my love for kids is the main reason why. I also enjoy math and science, which makes sense if I want to become a doctor.

4. Jackie Zeigle UT

Jackie says:

1. How did it feel when the race was over and you realized you had finished in the top four and were going to Orlando? Was it a surprise, or something you were shooting for all year?

I wasn't surprised because I was training so hard for this race and nationals and I was so ready.

2. Is it hard to think of going without your sister?

I have never gone but Laura has gone the last 2 years; last year she took 3rd. I am very sad for her because this was the year she wanted to improve, but a back injury had got to her in early November, which took her out of training for awhile and there was nothing she could do but let it heal. She dropped out at about the 1-1/2 mark of the race.

3. Was Foot Locker Regional the best race of your year? If so, tell us about what made it so. If not, tell us about your best race of the year.

Well, I trained through all the races early this year because I wanted to do well at Footlocker Nationals, I didn't want to peak at a race that didn't matter so we kept our training up till now.

4. Tell us about your coach(es) and what were the key training elements that helped you improve and get to Orlando.

Well, early in the season we did tempo runs a lot, and then in Nov. we did more speed work, fast type stuff and lots of grueling hill work-outs, but it paid off because the Mt. Sac hills were a breeze.

5. What are your goals Saturday? What kind of race will it take for you to get All-American?

I will run to the best of my ability and give glory to God.

6. Who are the most important influences in your running life (family, coach, friends, etc.)? Who is your favorite elite (HS, college or pro) runner?

My whole family is very supportive and my teammates really help (Stacie Grover,) and especially my coaches (Jeff Arbogast, Robby Duncan, and Leisel Morris), are all great influences.

7. What are your biggest interests outside of running?

I like going to our Youth Group at church, reading, I like to get together w/ my friends.
