TALLAHASSEE — Gently swaying ancient oak trees towered above runners at the FHSAA state cross country finals on Saturday morning.

Still, nothing rose higher than Golden Gate's Alex Pedraza and the Estero girls.

Both earned state championships at scenic Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

Pedraza captured the individual Class 2A boys title to become Golden Gate's first-ever state cross country champion.
