CLOVIS -- San Leandro High's Nijae Jones was involved in a collision in the opening seconds of the girls' 800 meter race on Saturday at the California Interscholastic Federation state championships at Buchanan High.
The collision caused the race to be called back, but Jones collected herself and proceeded to set a personal record to finish second in 2 minutes, 9.91 seconds.
"(Competitors) started to come in too soon. I tripped and scraped up my knees and my hands," said Jones about the collision. "I told myself I had to get back in my game-set.
Jones made a move to take a slight lead with approximately 280-meters to go, but she could not hold off Mikaela Smith of Clovis North (2:08.39).
