Aster Jones Blazes New 60m PR At Spokane High School Invitational

Roosevelt OR junior clocks the second-fastest prep time in 2025, running 7.36 in preliminary round, followed by 7.38 to win final; Hayden Boaz wins boys 3,000m in clash of Northwest runners

SPOKANEAster Jones of Black Star Athletic Academy of Oregon recorded one the top prep sprint times in 2025 on the second day at the Spokane High School Invitational on Saturday at The Podium Powered by STCU.

Jones’ time of 7.36 seconds was good for US#2 in the girls 60 meters, which she ran in the preliminary round before ultimately winning the final in 7.38 against GLS Speed Track Club's Journey Cole (Kent Meridian WA), who bested Jones in their last outing at the Spokane High School Preview on Jan. 11.

“I think all the hard work started to pay off today and it was the right day,” said Jones, a junior at Portland's Roosevelt High. “I was in high spirits for sure.”

Nicholas Altheimer (Emerald Ridge WA) of Kitsap Fliers Track and Field Club won the boys 60 final with a time of 6.79, marking back-to-back personal bests after running 6.80 in the prelims.

Hayden Boaz of Bend, Oregon (Summit) ran 8:25.20 in the boys 3,000 metesr for the US#5 time after coming from behind with about 1,000-meters left in the race, where he separated from a pack of four others, including runner-up Mason Morical (Caldera OR) and third-place finisher Maximus Cervi-Skinner (Coeur d'Alene ID).

McKay Madsen (Clovis North CA) produced a shot put throw of 63 feet, 4.75 inches (19.32m) to win the boys competition, earning the sixth farthest throw of the season in his first indoor competition. His best mark came on his fourth attempt, giving him a convincing win over the field by almost six feet. 

Sutton Flint (Liberty-Issaquah WA) of GLS Speed and Chase Lawyer (Boise ID) Orchard Athletix gave the Spokane crowd a photo finish in the boys 60-meter hurdles final, with Flint running a first-place time of 7.80 and Lawyer running 7.81 for second. Flint and Lawyer's times rank sixth and eighth in the nation, respectively.

Morgan Herbst (Carlsbad CA) of ProCaliber Track Club, the California 300 hurdles champion and Nike Outdoors Nationals champion in the 400 hurdles last outdoor season, won the girls 400 in 55.11. Ethan Kirkendall (Timberline-Boise ID) of Orchard Athletix came away with a 48.20 win on the boys side.

Daniela Hughes (Los Altos CA) of Max Velocity Prep won the girls 60 hurdles in 8.95. 

Marissa Johnson (Tigard OR) made her return to The Podium with another win in the girls shot put competition, throwing a distance of 43-2.50 (13.17m), an indoor best. Johnson will compete in the women's weight throw competition on Sunday, where she ranks fourth in the country.

Sloan Dickson (Lynden WA) of Galbraith Track Club won the first event of the day in the girls 800, running 2:17.80. The boys 800 followed with a win for Bolt Track and Field's Findlay Hartshorn (Bear Creek WA) in 1:55.23.

Laine McKenzie of GLS Speed TC won the girls long jump, leaping 19-3.50 (5.88m). Aayden Simmons (Helena MT) of Helena Novas won the boys division with a personal best distance of 22-5.75 (6.85m).

Catherine Phillips (Mountainside OR) of The Inner Circle Track Club won the girls high jump after clearing 5-6 (1.68m). 

Geffen Guscio (Sentinel MT) of Mountain West Track jumped a winning height of 14-11 (4.55m) in the boys pole vault, and Kennady Davidson (Wenatchee) of Spokane Speed Academy won the girls pole vault with 11-9.75 (3.60m).
