In the only state where the steeplechase is a championship high school event, Van Furman of Tri-Valley and Sloan Wasserman of John Jay Cross River NY appear to have what it takes to win titles in New York this season.

Furman lowered his US#1 time in 3,000-meter steeplechase by running 9:13.63 on Saturday at the 57th Glenn D. Loucks Games in White Plains, N.Y.

Wasserman ran a US#3 time of 6:46.00 to win the girls 2,000-meter steeplechase and beat Anna Furman of Tri-Valley, who was second in US#4 6:50.07.

Jillian Scully (Miller Place NY), who won the shot put on Friday, came back to win the discus in a US#1 174-2, which also took down the New York state record of 172-0 by Stacey Schreder (Grand Island) from 1992.

Marshall Potter from Simsbury CT was named the most outstanding field performer after he won both the shot put and discus. His 185-foot discus throw is the best in Connecticut this season.

Zariel Macchia of William Floyd NY, who won Friday's rainy 3,200 meters for the fourth year in a row in 10:11.25, came back to win the mile in a time of 4:47.58, third-fastest in New York this season.

Rhode Island sprint sensation Lisa Raye made an impact on the meet with her victory in the girls 100 meters in 11.40 seconds.

Claudel Chery of North Rockland NY, after placing fourth in the 3,200 on Friday, won the mile title in a NY#3 time of 4:15.28.  Chery's points were key to North Rockland's team title

In an exciting, and physical, mixed 4x400 relay, Sufferen NY and Naugatuck CT battled to the finish line. Suffern got the win, 3:35.76 to 3:35.81.

Penn Relays DMR runner-up Ridgefield CT won the boys 4x800 relay in 7:45.94 over Bernards NY 7:46.63.

In Friday's action, Charlize-Trinity McKenzie, who came out the meet from Cedarburg, WI, held off a fast-charging Dylan McElhinney (Hunter College NY) for the win. McKenze's time was US#8 2:06.63 and McElhinney's time of 2:06.66 is equal to US#10.

Robin Lefebvre from Andre Grasset (Canada) came down down from Montreal to hold off Benjamin Berman (Bronx Science NY) for the win in the 3,200 meters as both runners cracked the 9-minute barrier, crossing in 8:56.27 and 8:57.01.
