Andrew Cullen of Medway won the area’s first gold medal at the OFSAA track and field championships Thursday at Brockville when he captured the senior boys’ discus with a 53.90-metre heave.

It came on his sixth and final attempt after runner-up Kevin Bowman of Port Elgin Saugeen had gone 53.05 metres on his final throw.

The area’s other medals were bronze by Lexi Aitken of St. Anne’s in midget girls’ high jump (1.55 ) and Kevin Mackey of Banting in junior boys’ discus (51.75 metres).

The meet continues with a full day Friday and concludes Saturday.
