FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Coming close in championship track meets is getting old fast for fourth-year LSU coach Dennis Shaver.

Since taking over as head coach of the LSU program in 2005, Shaver’s men’s and women’s teams have been in a total of 14 NCAA indoor and outdoor championship meets.

Six times the Lady Tigers and Tigers have finished second —three on each side. The latest runner-up finish came Saturday night when the top-ranked LSU women came up eight points short to Arizona State, which has now won the last three NCAA titles (two indoors, one outdoors).

In each of those meets, LSU has taken home the second-place trophy.
