DyeStat NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Rankings - March 1Published by
Impressive Performances Mark Conference WeekendBy Adam Schneider, DyeStat Editor The big battles at the SEC Conference Championships helped determine many of the event rankings. Christian Coleman of Tennessee beat co-NCAA leader Kendal Williams of Georgia in the 60-meter dash by running 6.52 as Williams got a poor start to finish in 6.67, then lost to Jereem Richards of Alabama, 20.34 to 20.50 over 200 meters. Pre-season NCAA 400-meter favorite Michael Cherry of LSU did not make it to the final but current NCAA favorite Fred Kerley of Texas A&M ran an NCAA-leading 44.94 in the prelims and beat freshman Akeem Bloomfield of Auburn, 45.21 to 45.43 in the final. It was a great battle in the 4x400 relay as collegiate record-holding Texas A&M (3:02.39) held off Florida (3:02.73) and Alabama (3:02.92). In other action, KeAndre Bates of Florida (55-2) beat Clive Pullen of Arkansas (54-6) in the triple jump. Devon Williams of Georgia beat NCAA outdoor decathlon champion Lindon Victor of Texas A&M in the heptathlon, 6047 to 5851. Elsewhere, Virginia Tech’s Patrick Joseph ran the fastest time in the country this year in the 800 to beat teammate Drew Piazza, 1:46.23 to 1:46.42 at the ACC Championships. Julian Harvey of SIU-Edwardsville jumped 26-9.25 (8.17m) to improve on his NCAA-leading mark at the Ohio Valley Championships. Junior Mostaffa Hassan of Colorado State had a breakthrough performance at the Mountain West Championships and threw 69-10.75 (21.30m) to re-take the collegiate shot put lead. Oregon’s Edward Cheserek cheered on his teammates at MPSF Championships and then went to the BU Last Chance Meet and set the collegiate record in the mile with a startling 3:52.01. USC’s Randall Cunningham had a three-inch season improvement to win the high jump at the MPSF Championships by clearing an NCAA-leading 7-5.25 (2.27m).
