Clinton Boys And Girls Sweep Class 7A Titles; Cooper Rodgers Runs US#10 46.59 In 4A 400 By Mary Albl of DyeStat It was a clean sweep of 7A titles for the Clinton boys and girls track and field program at the Mississippi State Track and Field Championships (May 4-7). At Pearl High School, the Clinton girls scored a dominating 143 points. Kaitlyn Jones led the way for Clinton winning the 100 hurdles (14.90) and 300 hurdles (44.51) and was part of the meet 4x400 relay that clocked 3:54.61 to snap a record from 1983. Biloxi’s Julie Segroves matched her own all-time state best in the pole vault by clearing 13-4. Hernando’s Kaitlyn Burge won the 1,600 and 3,200 titles. Omari Hampton led the way for the Clinton boys as he won the 100 (10.43) and 200 (21.18) titles. In the field, Pearl standout junior Kingi McNair went 24-2 in the long jump, good for US#22. 6A The Hattiesburg girls barely edged out Vicksburg, 73-71 to win the 6A championship, as the team claimed the 4x400 relay in 4:06.73 to seal the victory. The Hattiesburg boys also won the 6A crown, tallying 114 points and winning the 4x100 and 4x200. Justin Knight of George County won the high jump clearing 6-8. Knight also claimed the long jump 23-2.25. 5A In 5A girls action, the Brookhaven girls defended their title with an impressive 153 points. Teammates Sierra Edwards and Chrisiyona Quarels went 1-2 in both hurdles events, and ran on the winning 4x400 relay (4:08.60). The Brookhaven and Canton boys tied for the 5A title, each scoring 110 points. Canton’s Antoine Spillman swept the sprints, winning the 100 (10.75), 200 (21.44) and 400 (49.88). 4A Caledonia swept the boys and girls titles in 4A. On the track Raymond’s Cooper Rodgers ran a US#10 time of 46.59 to win the 400. He added a victory in the 200 as well, clocking 21.20. Dylan Reed paced Caledonia by winning the 1,600 and 3,200. 3A The Tylertown boys team scored 117 points to easily defend the 3A title. Senior Avery Abram Jr. dominated the jumps, winning the triple jump (47-5.50), long jump (23-5.50), and placed second in the high jump (6-2), while teammate Jamal Martin won the event with a clearance of 6-8. The Saint Patrick Catholic girls scored 94 to win the state trophy. Bella Jordan won the 800, while teammate Jayden Ware claimed the 1,600 and was second in the 800. Jefferson County’s Charve Gibson won the long jump (18-1), triple jump (38-3.25) and claimed the 100 and 300 hurdles titles. 2A The 2A girls race for the title came down to the wire as Charleston High bettered St. Andrews Episcopal by one point, 125-124. The team won the 4x400 relay, while St Andrews was second. Charleston senior Amia Wright won the 100 (12.18), 200 (25.63) and 400 (59.23), while St. Andrews dominated the distance events with sophomore India Mitchell winning the 800, 1,600 and finishing second in the 3,200. The team went 1-2-3 in the 3,200. Newton’s Erin Ware won the triple jump, 100 and 300 hurdles. The St. Andrews Episcopal boys team also had a close race for the state title as the edged out Northside 104-99. The team went 1-2-3 in the 1,600 and 2-3-4 in the 800. 1A The Tupelo Christian Prep boys won the 1A state title with 81.5 points. Carson Kessler led the way, winning the pole vault as the team went 1-2 and tied for third. After sharing a piece of the 1A title a year ago, the French Camp Academy girls team won the title outright, scoring 68.5 points, while East Marion was second with 64 points. In the sprints, Khloe Byrd of Resurrection Catholic won the 200 and 400, and finished second in the 100.
