Hedengren, who won both the NCAA indoor titles in the 5,000 and 3,000 races three weeks ago in, lowered Valby's record of 30 minutes, 50.43 seconds to 30:46.80 to conclude day one action from the Cobb Track and Angell Field. Hedengren also moves to No. 7 all-time on the U.S. list, making the top 10 list all sub-30:50 performers. New Mexico's Pamela Kosgei, the reigning NCAA outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 champion, was the only other competitor in the field who could keep pace with the BYU freshman, finishing three seconds behind in second in 30:49.99 to also dip under Valby's collegiate record. Hedengren and Kosgei broke away from the rest of the field 3,200 meters in at 9:57.55, building a 15-second lead on a chase group of four. The margin at the end between Hedengren and third place, Edna Chelulei of Eastern Kentucky, was nearly 47 seconds. Despite being that far behind, Chelulei managed to clock the eighth-fastest time in collegiate history in 31:33.57. Hedengren's historic run capped off a dominate day by BYU in the women's invitational races with four event wins. Raygan Dimond won the steeplechase in 9:55.03, Carmen Alder won the 1,500 in 4:08.56 and Taylor Lovell won the 5,000 in 15:15.46 prior to Hedengren winning the 10,000. In the men's races, New Mexico's Habtom Samuel bounced back from disqualification at NCAA indoors in the 3,000 with a win in the 10,000, running an NCAA-leading 27:30.51. Oregon's Simeon Birnbaum also ran an NCAA lead in the 5,000, winning in 13:19.73 with a 56.46 final lap. Wisconsin's Matan Ivri closed his last 400 in 54.98 to win the 1,500 in an NCAA#3 3:38.15, holding off Chris Caudillo by a little over a second. Colorado's Kole Mathison ran an NCAA No. 4 8:32.42 in the steeplechase, beating Wyoming's Ryker Holtzen by two seconds. More news |
