Dillon Mitchell became the fifth fastest U18 man in history on Friday at the Texas Relays in Austin, running a wind-legal 10.10 in the prelims of the 100 meter dash.

Mitchell’s time also makes him the fastest sophomore in history and 10th on the all-time high school list. A month ago, he ran 9.88 with +5.8 m/s wind, the third-fastest all-conditions mark in history, to open up his outdoor season.

With those two performances and a win against Tate Taylor and Jake Odey-Jordan in the 60 at Nike Indoor Nationals last month, Mitchell is poised to be a national championship contender come June.

He’s scheduled to race in the final at 3:10 p.m. central on Saturday.

Another premier Texan, Andrew Jones, broke his own all-conditions high school record in the boys 110 hurdles, clocking a 12.97-second performance to become the first high schooler in history to run under 13 seconds.

This is hardly the first time Jones has put up historic performances in high wind. At the same meet that Mitchell ran his 9.88 100, Jones ran 13.01 with +6.2 m/s wind. Friday’s wind was only +2.8.

Jones’ time converts roughly to a 13.15 with no wind, which would be #2 all-time behind Wayne Davis’ 13.08 from 2009. With +2.0 m/s wind, the legal limit, it converts to 13.01 seconds.

Jones has been setting up quite the challenge for Joshua Kai-Smith (Gar-Field VA) in the early going of the outdoor season. Kai-Smith is the only person who’s beaten Jones in 2026, topping him at the VA Showcase in January and at Nike Indoor Nationals in March. The senior hasn’t opened up his outdoor season, though, and he’ll have his work cut out for him when he does.

At the moment, Jones has run three tenths of a second faster than any high schooler in the country. He’ll have a chance to extend that lead — possibly in legal wind — in tomorrow’s final.

Other highlights from Friday action at the Texas Relays:

- The Long Beach Poly CA sprint medley relay teams made quick work of their competition, winning the girls and boys races in US#1 times. The girls ran 3:57.98, followed by a 3:23.86 performance on the boys’ side.

- Isaiah Whitaker (Bloomington Central Catholic IL) beat Jaxon Jerabek (IMG Academy FL) on a tiebreaker in the boys pole vault. Both cleared 17-11.25, a new US#1 mark.

- Destiny Coleman (Woodlawn MD) ran a US#1 13.25 in the prelims of the girls 100 meter hurdles.

- On the collegiate side, Texas’s Kelsey Daniel jumped 7.89 meters (25-10.75) in the men’s long jump, the farthest mark in the NCAA this year.

- Texas teammates Abigail Wolfe and Carleta Bernard went 1-2 in the prelims of the women’s college 100, running 11.01 and 11.04, respectively, the two fastest times of the year in the NCAA.
