ARCADIA -- Jonathan Cabral still can't get through a 110-meter hurdle race without inflicting some sort of pain on his left leg. Nor can the Agoura High junior track standout find a way to get out of running the more demanding 300 hurdles.

As long as Cabral keeps on producing efforts like he did Saturday at the 43rd Arcadia Invitational, the pain will continue to be overshadowed by the adrenaline rush that comes with being one of the nation's top performers.

Cabral overcame hitting his left ankle on the next-to-last hurdle to win the 110 race in 13.94 seconds -- one-hundredth off his season-best mark that ranks No. 6 nationally -- then clocked a personal-best 36.83 to capture the 300 from an outside lane to move up to third in the country this season, highlighting a night of exceptional results for several local standouts.

"I honestly did not expect to PR that much (in the 300). It took a lot of hard work," Cabral said. "My dad (John) said 'Don't let those guys disgrace you by putting you out in lane 9,' so I'm really proud of this. The 110 is still my favorite, best event, but I guess I'm going to have to continue to do the 300s."

Cabral was the area's only double winner, receiving a pair of championship long-sleeve T-shirts and commemorative watches to go along with his gold medals. But he wasn't alone in his ascent up this year's national performance list.

Rio Mesa of Oxnard opened the meet in impressive fashion by producing the country's

"We had run a lot of fast times, but we haven't really been tested," Jordan said. "We set the school record earlier this year, but I didn't think we'd kill it by that much. This gives us a lot of confidence."

Jordan returned to take second in the seeded 100-meter dash in 10.68 seconds -- tied for 10th among wind-legal marks in the country this year -- and fifth in the invitational 200 in 21.89, two-tenths off his season-best, but the Spartans were still soaking in recording the No. 3 400 relay time in meet history.

"This is a really big deal. I remember I watched them here last year and I knew I could help them out," said Roach, a Channel Islands transfer. "We had heard so much about Poly, but we had really good handoffs and we put up a great time. I knew once I gave it to Selig, we had it."

Selig created even more space on Long Beach Poly, Serra of Gardena (41.57) and Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (41.64), allowing Perkins to run away with the title.

"I thought it was kind of weird there was no one else around, but I trusted Jamaal to bring it home," Selig said.

Added Perkins: "I didn't expect that. I thought 'Where's everyone at?' It was just a crazy race."

Jordan, Roach, Selig and Steven Richards nearly concluded the meet with another victory in the 1,600 relay, but finished second in 3:15.03 -- No. 5 in the country this year -- trailing Serra (3:14.63), which relied on USC-bound Robert Woods' 46.3 anchor to post the nation's third-fastest mark.

Oaks Christian of Westlake Village junior Niko DiMartino produced similar heroics in the long jump, winning the event with his final attempt of 23 feet, 9 1/4 inches, overtaking Ridgeview of Bakersfield's Johnny Carter (23-7).

"Before my last jump, I said 'Niko, it's time to go to work' and God helped me bust something out right there," DiMartino said. "It's crazy to come out with a win because these are the best athletes around, but I have to stay humble and keep working."

Simi Valley's Liberty Miller took second in the girls' invitational 3,200 in a personal-best 10:31.05, trailing Arcadia's Catrina McAlister (10:27.86) in a race that produced the nation's Nos. 4 and 6 outdoor marks this season. Oak Park's Melissa Skiba (10:46.59) was eighth and Saugus' Stephanie Bulder (10:50.46) and Karis Frankian (10:50.50) were 10th and 11th.

"It was really important because I know all these girls so well and I wanted to feel where I am at this time of the season," Miller said. "My best time was when I was a sophomore and that was like 11-flat, so I really needed this. This was a good test, but I know I can go faster. This is the first chance I had to push myself, especially in such a high-prestige race."

After entering the meet with the nation's No. 2 outdoor time in the girls' distance medley relay, West Ranch of Stevenson Ranch's Kylie Long, Bailey Miller, Jennifer Owen and Ashley Welker lowered their time to 12:00.49, but finished third behind Redondo Union of Redondo Beach (11:54.75) and Corona del Mar of Newport Beach (11:59.03). Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's Amy Weissenbach, Lauren Hansson, Jennie Porter and Cami Chapus were fifth in 12:07.80.

Owen placed second in the girls' seeded mile (4:59.58) and Saugus' Amber Murakami (5:14.01) took 11th. Oak Park's Kaycee Holcomb finished sixth in the day session mile in 5:11.69.

Burbank's Greg Dotson (4:16.29) was seventh in the boys' invitational mile, followed by Royal of Simi Valley's Travis Edwards (4:17.18), who also contributed to the Highlanders' ninth-place finish in the distance medley relay (10:27.09).

Harvard-Westlake's Matthew Bedford was third in the boys' invitational 400 (48.60) and fourth in the seeded 200 (21.99).

Rio Mesa's Valexsia Droughn (12.09) took fourth in the girls' seeded 100 in a season-best time and Birmingham of Lake Balboa placed sixth in the girls' seeded 400 relay (48.94).

After winning the day session in the girls' high jump by clearing 5-7, Thousand Oaks' Lydia French tied Rio Mesa freshman Raegan Nizdil for fourth in the invitational flight at 5-6. Oak Park's Tayler Johnson, who placed sixth in the girls' seeded 100 hurdles in 15.11, tied for 10th (5-4).

Thousand Oaks' Philip Hanley was sixth in the boys' high jump, clearing 6-7. Oak Park's Connor Stark tied for sixth in the boys' pole vault (15-1) and Crespi of Encino's Brandon Greenberg was seventh in the boys' shot put (57-1), with teammate Matt Tominac placing 13th (54-3 1/2). Bryan Bennett was seventh in the invitational triple jump (44-7) for the Celts.

Royal's Thomas Garner finished fourth in the boys' seeded 300 hurdles (39.36) and teammate Sean Davidson was seventh in the seeded 3,200 (9:09.90), with Thousand Oaks' Kevin Joerger finishing 11th (9:13.65).

Saugus' Amber Wright, Alex Hampton, Nicole Penick and Jenna Vincej won their 1,600 relay heat and finished third overall during the day session and 10th for the entire meet with a mark of 3:56.32, just off the program record of 3:56.07 set at last year's Southern Section Div. II final.

Burroughs of Burbank's Anthony Monroy was second in the boys' rising stars mile, clocking 4:22.73, and Hart of Newhall's Sam Peckham was sixth (4:28.66). Newbury Park's Sean Grumney placed 11th in the open mile during the day session, running 4:22.75.

Canyon's Tiffani Stone finished 13th in the girls' invitational long jump with an effort of 16-6. Valencia's Faith Anumba, after winning Friday's long jump flight, took sixth during Saturday's day session at 17- 3/4.
