Gold Coast Mayor Wants to Bring IAAF World Outdoor Championships to Gold Coast After Successful Commonwealth Games

By Adam Kopet

Duncan Mackay of Inside the Games reports Gold Coast, Australia, mayor Tom Tate wants his city to bid to host the IAAF World Outdoor Championships.

Gold Coast recently hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The 35,000-seat stadium was reportedly full for most of the track and field sessions held there.

The 2019 World Championships are scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, with the 2021 edition for Eugene.

Mackay reports the biennial event will likely be held in Europe in 2023, with Budapest, Hungary, a leading contender. Africa is a preferred host for the 2025 Championships, leaving Gold Coast a possible host in 2027. However, if a suitable candidate does not emerge in Africa, the IAAF will likely look toward Oceania as a replacement.

The IAAF World Outdoor Championships have never been held in the southern hemisphere.
