DyeStat Discussions - EP415 - Madison Morgan
Published by
Madison Morgan, an incoming freshman at Episcopal High in Houston and representing Katy Express Track Club, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in three events in the girls 15-16 division July 29-31 at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville before concluding her summer by racing in two more events Aug. 3-4 at the AAU Junior Olympic Games at Humble High in Texas. Morgan enters the 3,000-meter race walk July 29 as the fastest eighth-grader in history following her 14:12.66 performance June 30 to win the individual title at The Outdoor Nationals, presented by Nike, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Morgan, who ranks No. 5 all-time among competitors in the 3,000 race walk from grades 7-12, examines a potential showdown against Angelica Harris of South Elgin High in Illinois and the Elgin Sharks Track Club. Harris, a rising junior, ascended to No. 4 in prep history with her 14:10.98 effort July 11 in Illinois. The race is also scheduled to include Heather Durrant of the Elgin Sharks, a rising junior at Elgin High who clocked 14:29.42 to finish behind Harris and elevate to the No. 12 all-time prep competitor. Morgan also speaks about her opportunities to compete in the open 1,500 and 3,000 meters in Florida, along with another 1,500 and the 2,000-meter steeplechase in Texas. She reflects on her 7:27.79 steeplechase performance July 3 at an AAU national qualifier in Webster, Texas, and how she looks forward to another opportunity to compete in the event before shifting all her focus to the fall cross country season. Morgan revisits achieving personal-best efforts of 4:55.74 in the 1,500 and 10:42.58 in the 3,000 in June, and explains how the balance of all her events has benefited not only her race walking, but strength and endurance for cross country as well. She aspires to qualify for Nike Cross Nationals in the fall, which would earn Morgan a return trip to Oregon in December, in addition to sharing her ambitions to run under 7 minutes in the 2,000 steeplechase and eclipse the 14-minute barrier in the 3,000 race walk, along with eventually transitioning to the 5,000- and 10,000-meter distances to prepare for USATF Under-20 competition. |
