New Balance Nationals Indoor: The Big Board

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The national indoor champinonships has begun at The Armory in New York City. Check here for a rolling list of winners, highlights, record-setters and other news and notes.

TFX will be updated throughout the meet to reflect the ever-changing national rankings.

Storylines

Sunday: The cast of characters who will take center stage at The Armory today include Dior Hall, Elise Cranny, Keturah Orji, Hannah Cunliffe, Desiree Freier and Alexa Efraimson. Five national records have already been broken and more could tumble on the final day of the championships. There is also strong competition brewing in the boys triple jump where national leader John Warren VA takes on Saturday's long jump champion, Nate Moore CA.

Saturday: Union Catholic NJ's quest for four relay championships began this morning with the shuttle hurdles, an event it won last year. (Update on this: Western Branch VA pulled out an upset victory; UC was second in the shuttle hurdles and later third in the SMR) ... Earlier, Alabama football recruit and hurdles star Marlon Humphrey pulled up after the fourth hurdles with an apparent injury and did not finish his 60-meter prelim. ... The top three teams from NXN on the boys side, Gig Harbor WA, CBA NJ and Brentwood TN are all entered in the 4 x mile relay with an eye on the 17:20 national record. ... This evening, Blacksburg VA's boys lead a strong field in the 4x800 relay. ... There is a huge girls shot put event at 2 p.m., when Stamatia Scarvelis CA, Raven Saunders SC and Ashlie Blake NV go at it. ... Devin King LA will try to break the national indoor record in the boys pole vault.

Friday: There will be a crush of additional media at The Armory today who are interested in covering the Kayla Montgomery story. Montgomery was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis as a freshman and today the senior at Mount Tabor NC is one of the top runners in her state. She is entered in the 5,000 meters. NBC's Today Show, My America (Fox) and ESPN E: 60, Vanity Fair, the New York Times, USA Today and NPR Canada are among those expected to be here for Montgomery's race. She was on the Today Show live on Saturday morning.

The meet started on time at 9 a.m. and all of the action is emerging elite until this afternoon. Be sure to check out the live webcasts, which feature two screens: One for the on-track racing and the other focused exclusively on the field events.

This evening's featured events are the 5,000 meters (b/g) and distance medley relays. The girls high jump is also a championship final.

Meet results and TFX ELITES will be updated throughout the meet.
