PREVIEW OF 6A EVENTS:

Girls 3200 Meter Run 6A
Smithson Valley sr Devin Clark has been a consistent force in the State 3200 earning bronze as a frosh (“old” 4A), silver as a soph, and gold last year.  She’s on a roll with a state-leading 10:18.37 (all-time TX#4 3200/2-mile) Region win which is the current US#7 and was also State XC champ and 11th at NXN last fall.  Houston Lamar soph Julia Heymach will provide a fierce challenge based on her all-time TX#5 10:18.56 Area win (TX#2/US#8) and 13th at NXN (top soph) close behind roommate Clark. Rouse jr Madie Boreman and Flower Mound sr Safee Belbina are both 2-time NXN vets and should be in the mix for 3rd with Brandeis sr Haleigh Galvan, Kingwood jr Abby Guidry and Abilene soph Ashton Endsley.

Boys 3200 Meter Run 6A
NB Canyon sr Alex Rogers struck Texas Relays gold in TX#2/US#31 8:58.53 which leads 6A and is all-time TX#22.  He was 2nd in State XC followed by 17th at Foot Locker Nationals and a trip to NXN.  This UT signee will be running on his soon-to-be home track.  His soph teammate Sam Worley has come on strong, most recently earning Region silver in TX#3/US#46 9:01.66 (Rogers 1st in 9:00.60) setting a new TX soph record, cracking Brad Hauser’s 9:01.76 from 1993.  Region 4 also had Holmes sr Chris Myers clock 6A#3/TX#5/US#87 9:07.58.  Other contenders include State XC champ Heritage jr David Strome, College Park sr Connor Meaux (both NXN qualifiers), Hendrickson soph Daniel Viegra (State XC 4th), and Southlake Carroll soph Reed Brown.

Top-notch like the girls:

Girls 800 Meter Run 6A
Boyd jr Aaliyah Miller captured the State 800/1600 double last year and then won USATF Junior Olympic gold in 2:06.28, all-time TX #2.  She’s back to defend in the 800 with a season-best TX#2/US#10 2:09.51, but dropped the 1600 in favor of the 400 where she placed 8th in State as a frosh along with 800 silver.  Edinburg sr Alex Cruz took her Region in TX#5/US#26 2:10.79, nipping Judson sr Dominique Allen’s TX#6/US#29 2:10.93.  Madison Compass and Christine Terhune will be in the hunt, while Julia Heymach 2:07.65 TX#1/US#3 (all-time TX#6) and Devin Clark 2:10.20 TX#4/US#18 have opted for the 1600/3200 double.

Boys 800 Meter Run 6A
Kingwood sr Myles Marshall, two-time defending State champ and 2nd at US Junior Nationals last year in all-time TX#2/US#19 1:48.43, could be running against the clock and meet record 1:48.21 set by Jonathan Johnson in 2001.  His closest challenger is school district rival Summer Creek jr Cam White who posted a 4-second PR for District silver in TX#7 1:53.53.  He’ll be tested by Region winners CC King jr Parker Scott (TX#9 1:53.86), Midland jr Bryce Hoppel (TX#10 1:54.34), Manvel jr Josh Martin (TX#15 1:55.05).

Girls 100 Meter Hurdles 6A
DeSoto jr Alexis Duncan claimed gold last year and went on to win NB Outdoor Nationals in 13.33 all-time TX#3/US#17.  She’s showing similar form this year with US#4 13.45 (1.6) in Region prelims and all-conditions US#3 13.36w (+3.1) in the finals.  Cypress Lakes sr Jessica Duckett took her Region in 13.56w (+2.2) while #2 returner (4th) Warren sr Jerica Lovewon hers.

Girls 100 Meter Dash 6A
The top 4 are back from last year’s blanket finish.  DeSoto jr Kira White won by an eyelash in 2014, nipping Judson sr Talajah Murrell by just three-thousands, 11.657w to 11.660w.  Both improved on their respective 6th and 5th places in 2013.  White’s 11.56w (+3.0) Region II win is the top all-conditions TX time this year.  Klein Collins sr Taylor Bennett is looking to improve on her bronze efforts the past 2 years, including 11.68 just .02 from 2014 gold.  Her 11.62 (+1.1) Region mark is TX#1 wind-legal this season.  Duncanville sr Tiffani Johnson was just .04 out of the 2014 medals in 4th.

Boys 100 Meter Dash 6A
Plano East sr Chris Ntreh (3rd in 10.45) was one of four non-seniors in 2014, but is the only one to qualify in the 100 again.  His competition includes Sachse jr Devin Duvernay, the Region II champ in 10.48 (+1.4) TX#1/US#4 wind-legal and Keller Central sr Jacob Gray, the Region I winner who clocked 10.53 (+1.1) TX#3/US#14 in the prelims.
